The results are in.. 50 Top Pizza has released their list of best pizzas in the world and guess which pizzeria is representing Portugal on the list again?
who owns forno d'oro?Forno d'oro is owned by Tanka Sapkota, who was born in Nepal and brought his passion for Neapolitan pizza to Lisbon. He trained under the Gombero Rosso Master Course and his wood-fired pizzas have ranked him in the top pizzas in the world list multiple times. They are receiving Fiori di Latte cheese fresh from Italy multiple times per week! Where did forno d'oro rank in the 2024 top pizza in the world list?
Forno d Oro is the ONLY pizzeria in Portugal to rank on the top pizza in the world list, so it's quite an accomplishment! For 2024 they ranked 73rd in the world and the 12th best pizzeria in Europe.
Parabéns! (congratulations in Portuguese) What we ordered.
Are you hungry yet? Let's try a few of the best pizzas in Lisbon together!

We were with some dear friends who were moving away and we all decided that in order to mark the occasion properly there was another pizza we just had to try and we could only do it if we worked together as a team lol.
Burrata, prosciutto e Rucola - €15.50
This pizza was so unbelievably delicious and a perfect example of how it takes just a few high quality ingredients to make a dish really shine!
Light and fresh yet highly engaging - we were surprised that this was our favorite pizza of the night! Good thing we ordered it at the last second, right?! ;)
It may even top the fig, prosciutto, and gorgonzola pizza. We'll probably have to visit another time to know for sure, though. ;) Gordon FInest Scotch Ale, Scotland - €8.95

At the end of your meal at Forno d'Oro you always have the opportunity to enjoy the parting hospitality of limoncello or grappa. If you've never tried grappa (it's potent), maybe you should give it a try. After that you'll almost certainly always pick limoncello! haha :)

We love Forno d'Oro! When you have such a great experience at a restaurant the first time that you want to bring your friends who are also pizza lovers you know it's the real deal.
Still, there is a smidge of apprehension that a second visit to a place won't be as good as the first, you know what I mean? As you can tell from our photo review, forno d'oro is living up to our expectations and we won't hesitate to come back and bring more friends the next time we are in Lisbon! Highly recommend you stop in for some amazing Neapolitan pizza in Lisbon! Best Places To eat in Lisbon:

Bandalho Meat & Wine is a new restaurant in Carnaxide (Lisbon, Portugal) in walking distance of Holiday Inn Express Alfragide.
Band'alho meat & wine vibeThis restaurant was new to the neighborhood on our visit and we arrived just as they opened so we had the place pretty much to ourselves. Inside the restaurant is nicely finished and is somewhat T shaped, making the back area where we were sitting a nice semi-secluded area to reserve for a large party.
As you can see there were multiple large TVs in the restaurant and I have never been a big fan of this. The bright screens really detract from the aesthetic of the space and they distract from the two most important elements - your dining companions and the food!
This is quite a common occurrence in restaurants in Portugal. Unless it's a sports bar type of establishment and you are watching a sports match while eating pizza and wings, I just don't understand the need for TVs in restaurants, especially when featuring depressing news and disturbing images. </rant> :) Lisbon Restaurant Reviews.what we ordered. With that out of the way, let's move on to the good stuff... what we ordered at Bandalho! Sangria Tinta 12€Red Wine Sangria - 12 euros for the pitcher. Sangria in Portugal is almost always excellent. The access to quality wines here is outstanding, not to mention locally grown citrus. Add a sprig of mint and you have a refreshing beverage on a summer evening in Lisbon! They did have a special house sangria which seemed to be a white wine sangria fortified with blue curaçao among other liquors, if that sort of thing is your jam. Hamburguer a Band'alho 10€
The hamburger was really tasty with quality meat and came with a side of fries and garlicky dipping mayonnaise which is also quite popular in Portugal.
Do you see that little rocket (arugula) leaf peeking out on the right? Slide your gaze to the left and notice the caramelized onion chutney which was the show stopper, taking this burger up a notch!
Picanha Sul Americana 15€Since we were at a meat place, it seemed only proper to get a steak. We ordered the South American Picanha. What is Picanha? (pronounced peek-ahn-yah) Picanha is a prized cut of meat in Brazil cut from the rump area. It has a thick band of fat and is served thinly sliced. Although originating in Brazil, Picanha has certainly gained popularity in Portugal.
The presentation was beautiful and upscale. A pile of finishing salt and whole peppercorns were evidence that the meat was to be the star, not overwhelmed by complex flavors. It's incredible what a pinch of salt and black peppercorn can do to a steak!
The steak was slightly under my cook preference. I wish the fat had been able to render a bit more. The roasted cherry/grape tomatoes added some nice acidity. For the sides we had an adorable dish of black beans. The black beans were nice, with bits of meat inside, also slightly underdone and bite-y. The rice was lovely and fluffy, really well done! Supremo de Chocolate 5€We were quite full, but thought it necessary to try one dessert (for your benefit). A little corner of our tummies could sample the Supremo de Chocolate. Wow did we underestimate this dessert! This dessert is a chocolate lover's dream! Imagine the thickest, fudgiest (is that word?) brownie you've ever seen, topped with chocolate ganache, and some red berries. For Americans, desserts in Portugal are a bit different and a good fudgy brownie is not easy to come by, making this an unexpected delight! My advice: Get the Supremo de Chocolate. Share it. Enjoy with coffee.

Lagoas Park Oeiras Review
I thought Lagoas Park Hotel was really nice. It's a well known corporate hotel on the outskirts of Lisbon and a fairly quick uber ride to wherever you'd want to go. While our mornings were entirely too rushed to get proper pictures, we felt this hotel had a solid breakfast!
Breakfast was included in our booking rate, which was around 200 USD inclusive.
Breakfast was included in our booking rate, which was around 200 USD inclusive.
The public restroom in the lobby is beautiful with wood and marble finishings.
In the lobby you can also find the hotel bar as seen below.
Just behind the bar is the seating area for the restaurant.
Hotel Restaurant Review
We did dine in the restaurant with our friends one evening. I ordered a nice fish dish which came with a side of mixed vegetables and some potatoes. Fish in Portugal is always delicious and fresh since the country is blessed to have access to so much coastline! The food was good and as one would expect, this is a light meal with a corporate hotel price tag. ;)
When you get off the elevators to head to your room you will see these nice sitting areas overlooking the lobby. The chairs are comfortable, with side tables, and there is nice lighting from the floor to ceiling glass entry of the hotel.
Room Tour
Here is a quick photo tour of our room at Lagoas Park Hotel.
The bathroom is spacious and they do provide the standard amenities. You'll notice on the second photo that a bidet is available at this hotel. In case you want to wash and dry your feet.
...lol. Just kidding. :p
The room is a bit on the dark side with the color scheme and lighting style, which isn't necessarily my favorite aesthetic.
Our room had a large flatscreen TV and closets for hanging clothes as well as a full length mirror right across from the bathroom door. Some of our friends were joking that it was the last place they wanted a mirror after they got out of the shower. haha.
Jokes aside, I always appreciate a full length mirror in a hotel room.
Below is the desk area if you need to do some work or want to eat some takeout. Which... we did.
100 Gramas
We ordered Uber Eats the night we arrived as we were too tired to go out anywhere. There was a Buy one get one free promo for a restaurant called 100 Gramas. We ordered Prego Maminha Maturada which is a sandwich of thin steaks and the bread is slathered with garlic butter. We got one side of batata frites (French fries) and one side of feijão (beans).
The total for 2 sandwiches, an order of fries, an order of beans, and a coca-cola was 18.74€ including service fee, delivery fee, bag fee etc. While the pictures are not impressive due to the dim room and takeout boxes, the food was good! It was good for the price we paid. But if we had paid full price of 41.74€ it may have been a different story. lol!
centro colombo
True to stereotype, the ladies spent the day wandering around the mall. I honestly don't care for mall days that much. There's nothing I really need to buy and the lights are too bright for anyone migraine-prone, but the company was top notch.
I took a few of the most random pictures that day starting with these women's button down linen shirts.

Nespresso Store
Our Portuguese friend educated us about visiting the Nespresso store for a free coffee. You actually take a ticket when you go in and when an associate is available they can give you a sample of any kind of Nespresso pod you would like to try. Afterwards you can buy a package of your preferred pod, if you'd like, of course!
Serra da Estrela
There were many choices in the food court but I landed on Serra da Estrela and ordered a plate of Arroz do Pato (duck rice) and the fresh pineapple and mint juice.
I was so fascinated by this art display of candy machines that I felt compelled to snap this crooked picture to remember it.
For my final memory of Colombo Mall in lisbon, I leave you with this bathroom sign which I found amusing. It's asking if you knew that with the toilet lid open you can be projecting "particles". They implore toilet guests to pleaseeee close the lid before flushing.
It makes you wonder what atrocities have been seen in there? On second thought.. scratch that thought.
The Kitchen
We had a very long bus ride from Lisbon. We were starving and found another buy one get one free deal on Uber for a place called The Kitchen in Quarteira.
These 2 Gulosa pizzas cost 13.20€ in total after discounts. Not too shabby.
I hope you have enjoyed this very random combo hotel review post / mall day / uber eats review post.
It had been such a long time since we had a bubble tea, probably since Ohayu in Quarteira. What better way to kill time than sippin' boba? Let's rewind..
We were meeting friends for dinner after at Han Table Barbecue in the Expo neighborhood (Parque das Nações) of Lisbon and guess what?
We were early! ;) Right after the uber dropped us off we got the message that they were running behind. |
Conveniently for us, a cute Boba shop was located directly next door to the Korean bbq restaurant! What better way to kill time than sippin' boba?

how to order bubble tea
Welcome to today's portuguese lesson!
The bottom right hand side of the menu has ordering instructions for your Bubble tea. I'll translate the Portuguese into English for you, although I'm sure you could work it out on your own. ;)
Como pedir um Bubble Tea (How to order a Bubble Tea) 1. Tamanho do copo (cup size) 2. Sabor (flavor) 3. Temperatura (temperature) 4. Nivel de Açucar (level of sugar) 5. Boba For Level of sugar you have 3 options: 1. Normal 2. Pouco (a little sugar) 3. Sem (without sugar) |
By the way, Bubble Time also sells bubble waffles which you can have filled with Chantilly (whipped cream) or Gelado (Ice cream) You can also get a Waffle Simples c/ Nutella (plain waffle with Nutella) As we've mentioned before, Nutella is very popular here. |
The vibe inside Bubble time
Bubble Time has a nice atmosphere and a variety of seating options. If you aren't in a rush, you can enjoy your boba on the terrace outside with a view of the telecabine. Maybe you like to feel part of the bustle. You can sit inside the shop and watch the ebb and flow of the line at the counter. On the other hand, if you want some solitude, you're working remotely, or having a meeting you may prefer to head upstairs to the second floor!
They are also rewarding loyalty here, which is a vibe we like! For every 9 purchases you'll get the 10th Bubble Tea or Waffle Grátis (free). I haven't seen a card like this for too long and it made me happy. :)
Bubble Time Lisbon Review
We ordered a large original milk tea, cold, with normal ice level and plain tapioca boba. We ordered the Margherita pizza of bubble tea for a baseline.
This was not necessarily the best boba tea we have ever had, but to be fair we normally have something like a Thai tea with boba, harkening back to our Thailand days, whereas here we ordered an original milk tea. Therefore the flavor was light in comparison, but appropriate for what we ordered. :)
The boba were perfectly prepared with just the right texture. The location could not have been more convenient for our plans.
We enjoyed our boba tea and while I wouldn't traverse the city on my next visit specifically to come here, I could see myself returning if I was in the Parque das Nações neighborhood of Lisbon and had a hankering for boba. The second floor seems an ideal location for travel writing with views of the Tagus while noshing on a bubble waffle stuffed with whipped cream... or Nutella ... or ice cream... Hmm. Tough call, isn't it! Maybe we will have to try one of each just to let you know which is best. ;) You can follow this shop on instagram @bubble.time.portugal |
Korean Barbecue in Lisbon offers a fun and interactive dining experience for you and your friends.
We made a trip to the Expo location of Han Table Barbecue and here is our review with photos! |
Where is han table bbq?
While there are multiple locations of this Korean bbq restaurant in Lisbon, on this occasion we visited the Expo location. You will dine along the Tagus river not far from the Lisbon International Airport and the Vasco da Gama Bridge.

what is korean barbecue?
At a Korean bbq restaurant, you can expect to receive a platter of raw meat of your choice along with a variety of side dishes (called banchan). Your table will have a grill for your party to use to cook the meat.
Yes, you're paying to cook your food... Maybe Kramer's pizza idea wasn't so crazy after all ;)
The proteins cook very quickly and you can enjoy them in a piece of lettuce along with banchan of your choice! Maybe you put in some kimchi or little bean sprouts for example along with the meat.
Scissors are provided to cut the meat as well as tongs to flip the meat on the grill. Your waitstaff will change out the grill plates as needed to ensure an enjoyable cooking experience.
If you're nervous or not sure what to do, just ask! They'll be happy to explain how it works or assist you. Once when we ate Korean BBQ at Tomato in Tokyo they regularly came back to lend a hand and keep things moving smoothly so we always had the next bite ready! :)

What we ordered:
copo de sangria tinta - 2.5
I ordered a copo de sangria tinta (a glass of red sangria). The sangria at Han Table Barbecue cost 2.5€. It was refreshing and I appreciated the way the citrus brightened the otherwise meat-heavy meal.
If your friends also want sangria you can share a liter of sangria for 12.95€.
Cass Beer - 3.6
Trying international beers is always novel when visiting a restaurant like this. Here we tried Cass beer and below you can see the ingredients and label details.
Jinro Plum Soju - 7.95
Some say that it is an absolute must to drink Soju with Korean barbecue. One of our friends enjoyed this imported Jinro Plum Soju alcoholic drink.

When in doubt, order the combo option, that's our motto. With that in mind, we went for menu item 555 the combination platter. It looks pretty beautiful for a platter of raw meat, doesn't it?!
What is in the Han combination platter?
A bit of everything! Bulgogi, YanBian traditional beef, seasoned pork belly, seasoned beef belly, spicy shrimp, squid, marinated chicken, lamb meat, and iberico black pork.

Dining Experience:
The weather in Lisbon was beautiful so we opted to sit outside on the terrace. Is there anything better than dining al fresco in Europe!?
Here you can see the grill covered and then in action. We were enjoying the company with our friends so much that we really didn't get any more pictures of the cooking process after this. Don't regret it at all. :)
our han table barbecue expo review:
We had a great time at Han Table in Expo! This is our second experience at a Han Table restaurant in Lisbon and we think it's really fun. It's something different and grilling together adds an activity element to the dining experience. The ingredient quality was high and the staff was kind. We would come back!
What's Nearby?
Directly next door to Han is Bubble Time, a Boba Tea shop!
You're also right by the Tejo (Tagus) River. So you can enjoy walking along the Riverfront and why not take in some aerial views of the city by cable car/ gondola while you're here?
Fun fact: Did you know the Tagus is the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula!?

sushi Fixe Miraflores
Sushi Fixe is a sushi cafe with inside and outdoor seating in the Lisbon neighborhood of Miraflores, an Uber ride of less than 10 minutes from Belem, costing around 4 euros at the time of this post.
You may be thinking "Sushi Fixe is an interesting name. I wonder what it means and how do I even pronounce that?" I got you.
What does Fixe mean in English? Fixe is Portuguese slang for something that is cool or great. Fixe is pronounced "Feesh"
Sushi Rodizio Lisboa
As the sign indicates (if you look closely), Sushi Fixe is a Restaurante Rodízio.
What is rodízio in Portugal?
So you may notice some restaurants in Portugal are called rodízios. Rodízio is a portuguese word that basically means "rotation" in English.
This restaurant style originated in Brazil where diners pay a set price for their meal and waiters bring around a variety of fresh meats off the spit, in rotation. It's an all-you-can-eat style of dining.
The rodízio concept in Portugal is not exclusively for churrasqueiras serving grilled meats. There are fish rodízios, pizza rodízios, and sushi rodízios in all of Portugal, including Lisbon, just to name a few iterations.

Sushi Fixe Menu
Sushi Fix is basically a sushi buffet in Lisbon, only the rolls aren't sitting on display for unknown lengths of time and you don't have to get up for them.
How it works:
You have a slip of paper at your table with a list of menu items and space to write a number down. You simply write how many of each item you want and the sushi is made fresh to order! Since this is an unlimited sushi situation your waiter will come back and you can continue ordering more sushi as needed!

Salmon sushi Boat.
I've always dreamed of getting a sushi boat, but they are usually so expensive and seem like a lot of sushi. This is an amazing opportunity to get one. I never felt so cool in my life. 8)
This boat was quite salmon (salmão) forward with some pops of roe (fish eggs). The thin rice noodles can be seen below as well.

Sushi Fixe Reviews
Sushi Fixe is a great sushi restaurant in Lisbon. The value to quality ratio is incredible so it's no wonder they have 4.9 stars on google. Well deserved!
A sushi buffet like this is a great option for sushi lovers and novices alike as you can try so many different types of sushi in a low pressure kind of way. Of course you don't want to be wasteful and you will order conscientiously. Still if you don't love a particular piece it hurts less knowing you can order another roll!
Sushi Fixe also caters to different tastes in your group. Maybe not everyone in your family or friend group loves sushi like you. Now you don't have to fight bitterness because they can order noodles, salad, meat skewers and more while you eat your dream sushi boat!
how to eat sushi
I loved the instructions for eating sushi that are included in the menu and had to laugh because of how common it is to break these recommendations.
Pode - This section shows the things you can do - you can use chopsticks or your hands, you can mergulhe (dip) the sushi fish-side-first into soy sauce, you can set your chopsticks on the ceramic rest when not in use, you can coloque (place/put) the sushi in your mouth fish side down, and finally when you're done eating sushi you can rest the chopsticks on the Hashi-Oki as shown in the picture to signal to the wait staff you are done.

Não Pode - Things you cannot do when eating sushi including: rubbing the chopsticks against each other to 'remove splinters', If the chopsticks are damaged (have splinters), just ask for new ones. You cannot eat sushi in multiple bites, each piece should be eaten whole. You cannot put ginger slices on top of sushi. You should eat it in between pieces as a palate cleanser. You shouldn't put the wasabi paste in the soy sauce. You should place wasabi directly on the sushi. You cannot share wasabi and other sauce dishes with others, they should be individual. Nor should you pass food from your chopsticks to others.
So I'm curious how many sushi faux pas have you made? I have definitely eaten ginger on top of sushi. On this trip for the first time I mixed wasabi paste in soy sauce then later took time to read this page and had to laugh.
Don't worry, no one is going to slap your wrist if you didn't follow these tips for eating sushi. But honestly, I love that they included them.

Is SushI Fixe the best all you can eat sushi in lisbon?
Like anyone could even know that, Napoleon.
Given that sushi fixe (sushi fix as some call it) is the only sushi restaurant we've had the privilege to try in Lisbon so far, I suppose we can't say for sure.
But what we can say is that Sushi Fixe is a great sushi buffet/rodizio in Lisbon and we would go back in a heartbeat!

Hygge Kaffe Vibe
Immediately loved the vibe of this place from the green and white awning...
.... To the artsy, floral table ....
... to the thoughtfully designed napkins ...
The napkins read:
At Hygge, we thrive on the scent of cinnamon, we gather around waffles and/or cakes with mugs of hot coffee, sharing stories, the simple pleasures, a hot cocoa, board games, books and laughter. A haven of joy, the spirit of coziness weaving through, making it a warm and inviting home for all."

Love.
... to the charming tiled buildings within your gaze....
Hygge cafe had cute down to a science. Would you like to take a peek inside?
Portugal Travel Tip:
Many restaurants will post the menu outside (usually there's someone sitting right by it so it's a bit awkward) but many menus will also have a QR code on them. If you open your phone's camera you can scan the QR code to open the menu on your phone. It is also common to see the menu QR code on the restaurant's tables or the back of the chairs. It's kind of funny, but handy!
Inside Hygge Cafe is also very cute! But is the food as cute? Let's see what's on the menu..
Lisbon Hygge Cafe Menu
We ended up ordering 1 cinnamon roll with cream cheese frosting topped with pistachios, a savory waffle with bacon, an espresso, a bottle of agua com gás (sparkling water) and a menu de almoço (weekday lunch deal which included a smorrebrod (an open face sandwich/toast), a bowl of soup, a fresh squeezed juice, and a coffee for just 12€!)
Our entire order was under 26€
Feeling very happy to have all of this coming our way, we sat back and enjoyed the outdoor cafe seating and watched life go by on a Lisbon street.
Sparkling water arrived in a branded glass bottle. You see this in many restaurants in Portugal as well as hotels. One cafe (espresso) arrived as well. Remember, we ordered two.. =)

The coffee.
Não faz mal, no problem, I didn't mind waiting a bit longer for a coffee. I had already had some of the instant at the hotel and while it in no way compares to a fresh espresso like this, it did at least provide me with a bit of caffeine on this morning.
The price of an espresso at Hygge cafe Lisboa was one euro.
The espresso was nice and 1€ is a reasonable price for an espresso in a trendy cafe in Lisbon! They even have their own branded sugar packets. :)

The waffles.
The waffle Salgado (salty/savory waffle) was 8€ and featured turkey bacon flakes in between and on top of two waffles, a sunny side up egg, and some micro greens for garnish. Oh, and "maple" syrup. lol.
The Avocado Toast.
I opted for the Florentine Smørrebrød which consisted of avocado cream, poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, and smoked paprika over a slice of Gleba bread. It was nestled beside a colorful salad (which was a pleasant surprise as I wasn't expecting it!) with a few radish slices and pomegranate seeds. Stunning visuals!
Let's see how the egg looks inside:

The Cinnamon Roll.
It had been quite some time since we had an iced cinnamon roll and they seemed to be a specialty here at Hygge Kafe so we couldn't resist ordering one. I wanted to give it a try before getting too full from the smørrebrød.
Once again, the aesthetics are on point. Doesn't this cinnamon roll with cream cheese frosting and crushed pistachios look amazing?! You know what would go great with it? A cafezinho (a little coffee). But mine still hasn't arrived.
And wait a minute, neither has my soup or my fresh squeezed juice. There was quite a bit of confusion, and our server seemed puzzled. We don't know who dropped the ball, but in the end all of our food showed up and that's what matters!

The food we almost did not receive
The soup of the day was a nice creamy vegetable soup and the fresh squeezed juice was abacaxi (pineapple) and it was delicious. By the way, another word for pineapple in portuguese is ananás.
Lisbon hygge cafe reviews
For us, our personal experience at Hygge Kafe was a bit of an "instagram vs reality" type of deal. The aesthetic of this Lisbon cafe is on point and the food is so visually appealing, few could deny that.
The reality is that it was a bit of a miss for us.
With the exception of the soup, the hot foods were not hot by the time they reached us, unfortunately. Cold eggs and hollandaise sauce, anyone? I didn't think so...
The waffles were a bit on the dry side and I always think it's a gamble to order something with "maple" syrup, iykyk.
Similarly, the cinnamon roll was on the dense and dry side. Now this could be the style of a Scandinavian cinnamon roll for all I know. It's just not our preference.

Hygge gift ideas.
Hygge Roll-on • Cozy Socks Vintage Gift Basket • Skal Drinking Mug Hygge Gift Set • Fika All Day Poster •Hygge Gift Basket w/ Journal
The coffee, soup, little salad, and fresh squeezed pineapple juices were all great though!
In the end our dining experience was a bit stressful as it took so long to get all of our food, most of it was not received at it's prime, and all of this took our morning from a leisurely brunch and hotel check out to catch a 12:30 bus to arriving at the bus station with literally moments to spare as we were the last to board the bus and had been bracing ourselves that the uber would not make it to the bus station in time.
I would like to chalk this experience up as a fluke since the place has so many amazing reviews, but we can only share what our direct experiences are.
If you decide to try Hygge Kaffe out, you will love the atmosphere and get great foodie pics, if that's your thing. Let us know how the actual food tastes on your visit!

While some people eat out of necessity, we eat out of enjoyment and genuine appreciation for the amazing gift that food is.
Have you ever thought about food like that?
Not only does it nourish and strengthen us so we can live our best lives, but it also has the ability to entertain (ever watch a baby eat something sour? equally amusing to see the same reaction from an adult :p ) and enrich us intellectually by shedding light onto different cultures and the way historical events have influenced the flavors and styles of cooking around the world.
Yes. Food can actually make history interesting for people who are not, by default, history buffs! Now that's power. :) |

When visiting a city like Lisbon, Portugal you generally have wider access to restaurants serving unique foods from distant lands and this is, in fact, a huge draw for many weekend-in-the-city getaways!
You can imagine how excited we were when we discovered a nearby Armenian restaurant during our most recent weekend in Lisbon.

Ararate armenian Restaurant in Lisbon
Ararate Armenian restaurant is located just a half mile (about a 10 minute walk) from where we stayed in Saldanha. We arrived on a Sunday around 7pm without a reservation and on this occasion there was no trouble accommodating us.
The decor inside this Armenian restaurant was very cool and full of cultural elements from paintings to tapestries, and the ornate mirror everything combined to create a unique dining experience in Lisbon, as you will soon see.
Ararate Lisboa Menu
The menu at this Armenian restaurant in Portugal will take you on an absolute journey. It's somewhat of a work of art, in my opinion, and if you have time to read through it you will learn a lot, including that the restaurant is indeed named after Ararat - the mountains where the ark rested after the Flood of Noah's day. (Genesis 8:4)
The Ararate Menu is available in English and includes many descriptions of the traditional dishes along with beautiful photography. See the Ararate Lisbon Menu here and you'll understand what I mean!
Ararate Drinks Menu with Prices
While bottles of wine could be found on the left side, we focused on the right side of the page.
Remember in the 9 tips for eating at restaurants in Portugal post how we discussed ordering water in restaurants? Here is a good example for you. Still, bottled water, is available in a half liter or full liter for 2.50 and 3.50 euros, respectively. If you prefer Água com gás natural, that is naturally sparkling mineral water, you can have it for 4 euros.

You'll also note that they carry bottles of Sagres beer and when you see Cerveja pressão that means a draft beer. Wine by the glass costs 5-6 euros at this Lisbon restaurant.
Americans Try armenian food for the first time
We were really excited to try Armenian food for the first time! The menu really had us excited as everything looked and sounded so delicious!
Khachapuri Barco - Traditional Pastry with Cheese and egg 10,5€
How could we pass up a pastry boat filled with cheese? Ironically the first thing we ordered is actually from Georgia. Ararat restaurant, in fact, serves dishes from Armenia as well as the Caucasian countries bordering Armenia like Georgia!
So what is Khachapuri Barco?
Khachapuri Barco is a traditional Caucasian pastry from the Adjara region of Georgia stuffed with cheese, egg yoke, and butter.

How to eat Khachapuri Barco
The waiter prepared the dish for us to eat, but when you receive it the pastry will not be cut and you will see a bright egg yoke on top.
To eat Khachapuri Barco, you break the egg yolk and mix it together with the hot, melted cheese and butter until combined into a rich sauce. Then you can cut the pastry and eat it!

Our thoughts on Khachapuri Barco
The first bites were really tasty - I mean it's cheese filled bread after all! As the rest of the food arrived and the cheese started to firm up it was a bit too much for the two of us, although we did finish it of course. ;) We think this would be even better if shared among more people so everyone can eat a piece at its optimal temperature and texture!
I would not hesitate to try Khachapuri Barco again at an Armenian restaurant, especially with more friends!

Khinkali - stuffed dough bags 2,75€
The Ararat menu describes these as "Artistically hand molded dough bags, filled with succulent minced meat and a rich aromatic broth" You must order at least 3. We ordered 4 so we could each have 2 Khinkali.
I was most excited to try Khinkali because in the past when there was a Special Convention in Georgia, I thought I remembered the info page talking about "soup dumplings" and ever since I've been intrigued by the concept.
But how do you eat Khinkali?
First, pick one up by its little dough handle. =)
First, pick one up by its little dough handle. =)
Remember that inside this little parcel is hot soup broth as well as a "meatball" (not really in a ball shape, but just for a familiar reference). So you want to take a little bite to create an opening in the pastry that allows you to drink up some of that delicious broth!
While eating Khinkali, holding the soup dumpling in a way that the broth won't spill out all over the place. You can take bites of the meat along with slurps of the broth together! Once all the broth is gone, eat what's left but do not eat the doughy handle. It has served its purpose.
As it turns out, Khinkali is a Georgian dumpling that is super loved in Armenia and it's not hard to tell why. These were my favorite of everything we ate at Ararate.
To me, Khinkali is a perfect food. It's cute, made with love, filled with broth (big soup fan over here), and really flavorful meat. Eating it is a cultural experience, learning the technique is enriching and entertaining because you're probably going to make a mess at first.
Khinkali is just an all around good time. 10/10. Tell your friends.

Lamb Lulyá-Khabab Charcoal Grilled Meat Skewers with potato 17€
Meat is central to Armenian cuisine and we opted for the lam lulyá-khabab. The ground lamb meat is really nicely seasoned and it's traditional to roast these meat skewers over an open fire.
The skewer came with potatoes, a little sauce, and some red onion with herb slivers.
Trilogia Dessert trio - 7€
This dessert sampler platter was a feast for the eyes, don't you agree? What presentation!
Dessert descriptions from Ararate Menu:
- Honey Cake - Layered dough cake based on honey and sour cream
- Ecler (Eclair) - Sugary dough balls, known as choux, filled with custard as our chef likes it and a lot of powdered sugar
- Pakhlava (Baklava) - Pastry made with a paste of walnuts crushed with cloves and cinnamon, wrapped in filo pastry and bathed in syrup
Of all the desserts I would say the honey cake was my favorite. Imagine the work to make such thin layers of cake and perfectly stack them with cream in between!
Cafe Ararate - 5€
It only seemed right to finish the meal with Armenian coffee. Armenian coffee is made on the stove pot in a special coffee pot called a jazve. Armenian and Turkish coffee are brewed in a similar way. Cezve is the name of the Turkish coffee pot.
This method of brewing coffee normally yields a thicker and more flavorful coffee. We are fans of intense coffee, but actually found this to be a bit thin. Not sure if it needed more time to develop or if our palates are simply not yet attuned. Still, we are happy we tried it and loved the finishing touch of fresh strawberries!
A cool Lisbon Restaurant
If you're looking for a unique restaurant in Portugal, Lisbon in particular, why not give Ararate Armenian restaurant a try?!
What i'd like to try next time
If I make it back to Ararate restaurant, besides delighting in more Kinkhali, I would love to try their Dolma (veal stuffed grape leaves), Putukh (Lamb stew with chickpeas, potatoes, onions and tomatoes served in a clay pot and covered with a bread crust), Khurdjin (oven roasted lamb in a bundle of lavash with vegetables stewed in beer; lavash is Armenian flatbread) as well as the Tabulé, which by the way was one of my favorite things on the Sun Princess buffet during the Mediterranean Cruise!

1. The bread is not free.
If you're an American, you are used to a lot of freebies.
When you go to a restaurant, if there is bread and butter on the table it is complimentary. In fact, you can often get free refills on the free bread and butter at a restaurant.
If that is your background and you arrive at a restaurant in Portugal to see a lovely display of bread, butter, olives, and the like at your table, you will naturally assume it is complimentary.
It isn't.
This is called the Couvert and it may be on your table when you arrive or presented to you shortly after seating. The idea is to provide you with some little bites right away while you peruse the menu and then wait for your food.
The price for each item will be shown in the menu and you may be surprised at how it is itemized. Literally each pad of butter has a set price. To an American this can be a bit jarring the first time, but it really does promote a more intentional way of eating and less waste.

What if i don't want the Couvert?
If the couvert set is already on your table when you arrive just let the waitstaff know right away you don't want it and they will take it away and not charge you for it. (But please double check your bill at the end because it can be accidentally added)
If you've already taken some bites, I'm sorry to tell you that you will be charged for the entirety even if you thought it was free. Tourist Tax. :)
The good news is it's usually only a few dollars and in a region known for bread and olives you're more than likely going to love it! Some areas will also include things like sardine pate or algarvian cenouras (carrots).
If you want the olives but not the sardine paste, just let them know and they will remove it and charge you just for the items you want.

2. How to get a glass of water at a restaurant in portugal
If you're not a pop (soda) person, you may be accustomed to just requesting a glass of water in a restaurant. The wait staff will bring you an ice water and regularly refill it. In some cases they will set a pitcher right on your table!
This practice is not common in Portugal. In some cases you may be able to request and receive "Tap water"[in Portuguese: "Um copo de água da torneira, por favor" meaning "a cup of water from the faucet, please".
However, generally speaking water is served here in bottles. You can order a large bottle for sharing or smaller bottles and you will always be asked "com gás?" In Portugal, sparkling mineral water is very Popular so if you want one you ask for "agua com gás" and if you want regular still water you say "agua sem gás"
Portuguese Lesson :
Agua means "water"
Com means "with"
Sem means "without"

3. How to order a beer in portugal?
There are craft breweries in Portugal, but the most popular national beers of Portugal are Sagres and Super Bock. Both are refreshing after a day at the beach under the blazing sun or to wash down a hearty francesinha in the cooler months.
There are a few ways to order beer in Portugal.
You can simply ask for a "Sagres" or a "Super Bock". Think of it like asking for "Coke" or "Pepsi". You may have a personal preference for Coca-cola, but some establishments only carry Pepsi. If you order a Sagres and the restaurant doesn't carry it they may just reply "Super Bock?" and you can say "Sim" for "yes" or nod and say, "Está bom", as if to say "it's good!"
