If you have never had a Mango Lassi before, what are you waiting for?!  Lidl is carrying ready to drink Lassis in two flavors - Mango and Pineapple-Coconut.

Shown above: Vitasia Indian Style Lassi Manga + Vitasia Indian Style Lassi Piña/Ananás & Coco

Learn Portuguese

Mango in Portuguese is manga
Pineapple in Portuguese is ananás or abacaxi. Piña is Spanish for pineapple lol.
Coconut in Portuguese is Coco.

When you peel back the foil lid of the lassi containers you reveal a plastic seal with an opening to drink out of! This design worked great!

To recycle this package you remove the outer cardboard layer which is the label of this product and put it in the blue recycling bin, then you can put the plastic cup along with the foil lid in the yellow recycling bin which is for plastic and metal. :)

Vitasia Indian Style Lassi Review

We loved these Lassis! The flavor and texture were great on both, nice and creamy, and if you have never had a lassi before and don't plan to visit an Indian restaurant to order one, I think these are a solid introduction. Mango Lassi is very traditional and we did prefer it over the pineapple coconut edition.

Still, if you love Piña coladas you'll love the pineapple-coconut lassi too! The coconut flavor is prominent so you must love coconut to enjoy this beverage.

Lassis are a yogurt based beverage popular in India so if you're feeling exotic why not swing by your local  Lidl and see if you can still nab one of these delights?!

Vitasia Asia Style Gyoza Spicy Pork and Kimchi Filling - Lidl Review

Lidl Review: VITASIA ASIA STYLE GYOZA SPICY PORK AND KIMCHI FILLING

Carrying on from the Meat and Ginger Dim Sum Review, we also snagged these frozen Gyoza from Lidl.

Cooking Instructions: VITASIA ASIA STYLE GYOZA SPICY PORK AND KIMCHI FILLING

Okay so the package gave loads of ways to cook these gyoza, but I was looking for the most hands off version which for me was the oven option. The instructions were to put the sauce of your choice on the gyoza (I guess with a brush like this) and put them in the oven at 200 celsius for 15 minutes.

Btw, 200 C is approximately 400 degrees F.

Vitasia Gyoza Lidl Portugal Ingredients

Virar a meio do tempo.
  • Na panela: cozer o produto durante 3 minutos em água.

I really didn't have any sauce in mind so I just laid them in a single layer on a Nordic Ware quarter sheet tray and spritzed them with some spray oil and popped them in.

Which would you get?

Electric Dumpling Maker or Hand Press Dumpling Maker
While I didn't find the Kimchi flavor to be as pronounced as expected, overall I thought these were super tasty and I would definitely get them again. I believe the package had about 20 gyoza inside.

Between these Gyoza and the Dim Sum at Lidl, the Gyoza were the clear winner for us!

COST: 3.29 EURO

Lidl Donut Taste Test

1/23/2025

We've decided to try all the donuts at Lidl. We will refresh this post as new donuts become available... It's a trial, but we are willing to do it for you ;)

Glazed Donut .39

Let's start with the classic glazed donut. The Glazed Donut at Lidl is called an "argola". Well, all the donuts I saw today were called argolas. Other stores call them "dots", for example. :)

Learn Portuguese: Argola is a Portuguese word meaning "ring".

Quick take on the glazed donut:  "I liked it."

How would you describe it? "Good fluffy texture, nice fried donut-y taste. The glaze wasn't too sticky. It was a good price - pretty good for a donut I think!"

Tap here if you want to try making donuts at home

Glazed Donut side view with a bite taken out
I would tend to agree. To be honest there are a lot of really tasty donuts in America and during our time in Portugal not every donut has been in the game, but I think they are steadily improving. The glazed donut was fluffy and the glaze had just the right thin-shell sweet sturdiness that you're looking for. Flavorful, but not overly greasy. A nice sweet treat that you don't regret afterward!

Sprinkle Donut .59

Sprinkle Donut seen from the top
Tap for sprinkles!
Quick take on the sprinkle donut:  "Less good (compared to the glazed), a little gummier. The donut taste wasn't as good as the glazed. Maybe the sprinkles detract, I'm not sure. Just get the glazed."

Did you dislike it? "No."

So overall decent, just not as good as the glazed? "Exactly."
Coming in at a whopping 20 euro-cents more than the plain glazed, the sprinkle donut may not be the best bang for your buck, however listen... when you want a sprinkle donut, you want a sprinkle donut. I tried the sprinkle donut first and I was like "Wow this is a good Portugal donut!"

When I followed up with the first bite of the glazed donut I was surprised how airy it was, as you could see in the photo. The donut sprung back up whereas with the sprinkle donut it stayed squished down, hence the "gummier" description. I assumed the base donut experience would be identical on these, but actually no!

Unfortunately I missed a cross section pic of the sprinkle donut (or "argola party" as the sign says in Portuguese lol) so this can only mean one thing: I will have to try another one and add the photo so you can see the difference ;)

More donuts to come. Stay tuned! ;)

Vitasia Chinese Style Dim Sum With Meat And Ginger - Lidl Review

Lidl Review: Vitasia Chinese Style Dim Sum with Meat and Ginger

This week there were loads of interesting Asian foods in the local Lidl so we decided to try a few including this package of Dim Sum, frozen Gyoza, and Indian Lassi.

Cooking Instructions: VITASIA CHINESE STYLE DIM SUM WITH MEAT AND GINGER

You have 3 options
  • In a pan - cook with plenty of salted water for 4 minutes under low heat, turning them carefully. Drain and serve with the sauce of your choice.
  • In a steamer - Steam for 5-6 minutes, drain and serve with sauce of your choice.
  • In a frying pan - Fry the dim sum in hot oil for 1-2 minutes. Drain and serve with sauce to taste.

Tap the photo below for nutritional information of Lidl's Dim Sum.
Dim Sum Package
Ingredients List on Back of Dim Sum Package

We opted to prepare them via the first method and then I wanted to fry them off a bit after they were cooked with some toasted sesame oil. I quickly aborted that mission as they were sticking to the pan I was using (whoops, forgot to let it get back up to temp first - rookie move) and proceeded to plate.
Lidl Dim Sum Prepared
Dim Sum from Lidl Close Up

I really wasn't sure what molho (sauce) I would want with "meat and ginger" Dim Sum, so besides the toasted sesame oil, we had a splash of soy sauce.

What did you think of the Dim Sum we had the other night?
"They were mediocre, I guess."

How would you describe them?
"Soft, meaty - there was some sort of filling in there. I don't know what it was..."

I think that about sums it up.

No pun intended. Seriously. :p

Picture
Tramontina Pan
The filling was very smooth and processed and made for a lack of variety in texture imo. If you could deep fry these puppies maybe it would be better. I was impressed by how gingery they were, though.

For us, these were a pass. They were fine, it was an easy little snack after a midweek meeting, but nothing I would seek out again.

VITASIA CHINESE STYLE DIM SUM WITH MEAT AND GINGER Ingredients

The Dim Sum contained 60% filling which was a combination of beef and pork meat along with onion, carrot, rosemary, garlic, nutmeg, salt, and wine. The filling also contained potato, mozzarella cheese (what?!) .6% ginger, and pepper. The other 40% was the dough made of wheat flour and water.

Cost: 1.99 euro

APPETITOS CRANBERRY & FETA MINI PUFF PASTRIES Review

Aldi tends to stock cute little appetizers like these cranberry and feta pastries around the winter holiday season, but a lot of folks wish they were available year round.

Personally, I preferred the more savory caramelized onion and gouda puff pastry appetizers over these, although they were good. The combo of both flavors provides your guests variety in easy appetizers!

Tip: To reduce cleanup, try baking on silpat!

Aldi Review: Buona Italian Style Gravy & Sliced Beef

Apparently Buona is Chicago's original Italian Beef joint, but I've never been to Chicago (yet) so I had no idea! I was drawn to Buona Italian Style Gravy & Sliced Beef at Aldi because it was promoted as all natural, no MSG, no preservatives, no long ingredients lists... sounded like a good option for a decent meal on a busy night!

I ordered the Buona Italian Style Gravy & Sliced Beef at Aldi via Instacart and I believe the 4 lb container cost about $16.99. Be mindful that this container has a lot of liquid inside ("gravy"). Still it fed 2 adults for 4 meals - not bad!

Buona Beef Ingredients, Nutrition Facts, cooking instructions

The ingredients are simple:
  • Beef gravy - beef drippings, water, natural flavors, spices
  • Seasoned Beef - Beef, water, salt
Cooking Buona's Italian style sliced beef is pretty easy since ... it's already cooked. lol ;)
Just heat and serve.

The best way to heat, of course, is on the stove top.

Thaw the beef completely in your fridge overnight, then pour the contents of the container into a large saucepan and heat over medium until the meat reaches a temperature of 180 degrees.

Use a cooking thermometer to ensure safe reheat temperature!

Buona Italian Style Gravy & Sliced Beef Review

I could see myself purchasing this again, in a year. It's convenient, has respectable ingredients, and was about $2 per person per meal in our house. I recommend slicing up some peppers, onions, and mushrooms for optimal enjoyment. Even better - get yourself some authentic Chicago-style Hot Giardiniera.

Alternatively get some shaved/sliced beef raw and season it up just how you like. One benefit of that is not having this huge container around in your fridge or freezer.

Cooking these asian noodle pouches is simple. Just add 375ml of water to a sauté pan. Once boiling, add the contents of the pouch and stir. After around 5 minutes of cooking most of the water should be absorbed by the pasta. Add 15ml of oil. Mix and cook for 1 more minute.

Cooking the noodles is very simple. Add the pouch to a specific amount of boiling water. In about 5 minutes they are ready! You can stir-fry some meat and vegetables for a quick mid-week meal.

Serving the noodles.

One night we served the Asian noodles with sliced chicken and broccoli. The Thai noodles we served with chicken tenders, real creative over here... :p

These noodles are quick and easy to make, as expected. I found the Thai noodles to be a bit more flavorful. This isn't anything that I would stock up on, but they are handy on occasion when you need a quick side dish and are tired of plain rice.

Cost: Around 1.50 euro

The aldi "chocolate log" pastry we pretend is healthy - Grocery Review

7/15/2024

You know when you want a pastry, a delicious pastry filled with chocolate, but you also want said pastry to give an illusion of being "healthy" so you can hold your head up high, filled with pride, as you gobble it down?

Yes, I'm sure you've been in this very situation before unless you're one of those people who do not like sweets ... or joy. In which case that is definitely a sad existence and I am sorry to even let myself imagine it for a moment. On the other hand, If you're.a person who does not like sweet treats, but you do still like joy then I support that totally and at times I may even admire you all the more for it! :p

At any rate - we have found a solution for you at Aldi in Portugal!

Espiga multicereais Chocolate

Check this baby out!

I don't truly know the correct translation of the name Espiga Multicereais Chocolate to English.

Multicereais in Portuguese means multi-cereal, as in multigrain in English. Espiga apparently can mean "ear", "cobb", or "spike".
Picture
Aldi Portugal's Espiga Multicereais Chocolate aka Chocolate Log
I guess now that I'm looking at the picture while typing this, the decorative (and functional, no doubt) slits at the top do sort of resemble the pattern of a wheat spike - so maybe we solved the mystery after all!

And obviously Chocolate means... chocolate. ;)
Picture
This Chocolate Nutella Filled Pastry should be enjoyed with a coffee and a friend
Speaking of chocolate... I want you to notice that this long, chocolate-filled Portuguese pastry is filled from end to end. None of this "filled" donut nonsense where there's one bite's worth of cream and the rest is dry donut. Talk about a scam.

No, my friend, this is the real chocolate-y deal. :)
Picture
This Portuguese Pastry is cheia, filled, end to end with nutella/chocolate

But remember, this chocolate pastry is HEALTHY. I mean look at all those little seeds and grains on top! There are bits of oat, flax seed, and who even knows what else - all you need to know is it's healthy. ;)

Picture
So many grains in the pastry and on top make this a "healthy choice" *wink*
And because I know you want to see that the inside of the affectionately nicknamed chocolate log pastry is not hollow... someone took a bite just for you! :)

To note, the majority of "chocolate" pastries in Portugal tend to have Nutella slant.

Taking a bite.. for science. The people need to know!

Aldi Portuguese Pastry Review: Espiga MultiCereais Chocolate

We love this chocolate pastry from Aldi in Portugal. It's a 5/5 for us. A great and super healthy reward for surviving the weekly grocery shopping trip.

Jokes aside, the multi-grain element genuinely adds another layer of complexity to the flavor profile that we really enjoy. The nutella-but-thicker filling makes this entire pastry a bit heavy.

You see, when you get half way through eating it, it's so delicious you want to finish it off. But once you finish it off you may feel like you ate just a bit too much.

SO! It's a perfect treat to split in two - one half for you and the other for a buddy or half for now and half for later!

And you should definitely enjoy it with a cafezinho (a little coffee, in cute-portuguese speak)

Aldi - please don't read this and make it smaller. That would be no bueno, er... mau. muito mau. Se faz favor,  não faça isso. We like it how it is! Obrigada bjs. :) ❤

How much is the multi-grain chocolate filled pastry at aldi in Portugal?

For the grocery cost-of-living in Portugal researchers, it's essential to know the cost of food staples like this.

The Espiga Multicereais Chocolate pastry is currently .99 euro cents in summer 2024 which is approximately $1.08 USD.

Not too shabby, eh?

Every great pastry not only deserves, but requires a great cafezinho.

We saved up for a Delonghi that was a nice balance between a solid espresso shot with some optional manual adjustments and the convenience of automation for busy days which, let's face it, is every day. BTW. The cost of these machines is generally much cheaper in Europe than in the US. One of the few appliances where that is true - showing how culturally essential coffee is to the Portuguese people.
