Good To Know:

A great place for drinks (including the likes of fresh lemonade and vegan milkshakes), they have Happy Hour and live music sometimes.

What It's Like:

An Algarve ice cream brand serving up international favorites alongside very Portuguese flavors (ie Dom Rodrigo, Fig and Almond) with unbeatable views.

Good to know:

Plenty of indoor seating available if you need shelter from the sun or occasional rain drop. Bathrooms are down many stairs. Not ideal for those with mobility concerns.

What It's Like:

A classic Portuguese restaurant serving many traditional meals. Please try some Portuguese food during your Portugal trip!

What It's Like:

An extra tasty Chinese restaurant. Big reccos for chicken fried noodles (lo mein), dumplings, fried spring rolls, and the won ton soup.

Good To Know:

A smoky draft sometimes enters the restaurant due to the smoke from outdoor diners. If sensitive, choose a seat away tucked away from the door. Restaurant has a TV which often plays live football (soccer).

What it's Like:

Super cute cafe and roaster that doubles as an art gallery for local artists.

Good To Know:

Kanuck hosts a free weekly run group. They also take orders for small batch sourdough bread, delivered twice a week from Padaria Santa Isabel in Portimao.

They really do a lot to support the community locally so definitely check them out!

Black Anchor Tavira Review + Menu: Guiness + Pub Food On The Water

One of our first nights in Tavira we walked across the river to the Black Anchor - an Irish Bar and Grill right along the waterfront.

Fish + Chips + Mushy Peas - 13.50

We love fish and chips (we have a whole Fish & Chips category on our site!) so we had to give the Black Anchor's a try.

The cost was 13.50 euro. At the current exchange rate, that's just shy of $16.

It was late in the evening and we were sitting outside (gotta love that al fresco dining weather even at 9 or 10 pm), so the pictures aren't the greatest, but hey, it's something! :)

Black Anchor Review

Our first visit to The Black Anchor was with a large group and in fact, so was our second visit. That always takes on a different dynamic than when you go expressly to enjoy the meal. Even still, I was quite happy with this battered, fried fish!

Black Anchor has indoor pub seating as well as two seperate outdoor spaces, making it a great option to make memories with friends in Tavira. They have live music to enjoy and a solid fish and chips offering!

It's great to know where you can get Fish and Chips in the Algarve, not to mention a legit Guinness. Looking forward to someday trying their traditional Sunday roast.

Is Fish & Ships open on Embarkation Day?

Yes. Fish & Ships was open on embarkation day during our 4-night cruise and I recommend grabbing a bite here on day one if you want to avoid a busy windjammer buffet.

In the past, Fish & Ships was a paid casual dining option, but for the last few years it has been free, aside from an up-charge for a Fried Lobster Tail basket & chips (fries) at $12.

I'd like to try the fried lobster tail basket next time and let you know if it's worth the splurge ;)

The British style fish and chips comes with thick cut chips (french fries) and battered white fish.

The batter was light and delightfully crunchy after being freshly deep fried - this could be dangerous!

Please note: I saw a review online indicating that the fish is battered in chicken finger batter, which is clearly not British style fish, and I think that must have been an anomaly as we did not experience that at all during our cruise.

Please try Fish & Ships for yourself, the batter is delicious! :)

Royal Caribbean Fish & Ships Review Independence of the Seas - Is it Worth It?

Absolutely, it's worth it! It's free - how could it not be worth it?! ;p

No, but seriously, Fish & Ships is one of my favorite complimentary dining locations on Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

Of the chicken fingers, fish, and fried shrimp the fried fish is easily our favorite and the best thing on the Fish & Ships menu, in our opinion.

Fried shrimp take second place, followed by chicken fingers, but I bet all the kiddies love those unlimited chicken fingers and while they do, the parents can enjoy something a bit more "grown up" with the fish and shrimp!

Which Royal Caribbean Ships have Fish & Ships?

Fish & Ships is included in your cruise fare and is located on the pool deck of Independence of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

I wish more ships had this casual dining option!

No need to stop the poolside fun when you're hungry, just send a delegate over to Fish & Ships and have a taste of the UK on your cruise! ;)

DIY Air Fryer Fish and Chips | Continente Portugal Frozen Battered Fish Review

If you're looking for solid Fish and Chips in Algarve, I can recommend Lara's Plaice in Albufeira and The Water Dog in Armacao de Pera. Two very different styles and atmospheres, but both yummy and repeatable.

Unfortunately time, location, and budget won't always permit to go to a fish and chips joint, so the freezer aisle will have to do!

Continente Filetes de Pescada com Ovo

We found "fish filets with egg" (filetes de pescada com ovo) at the local Continente and wanted to give them a try in the air fryer.

As we were cooking these in the air fryer, we followed the package instructions of cooking the filets without defrosting at 200C (392F) for 11-13 minutes.

The Result:

The result was a tasty, simple fish sandwich dinner perfect for a busy weeknight meal.

We served it on a long fresh baked Portuguese roll called a cacetinho, or french roll, topped with ketchup and iceburg lettuce. Add some french fries (chips for brits) and you're sorted!

Okay obv this isn't the same as a true British Fish + Chips and air frying a battered fish fillet is never going to be the same as deep frying, but still this is a solid option for an easy and quick meal. :)

The Waterdog Review

The Waterdog is an institution in Armacao de Pera which is always busy and beloved by tourists and residents alike.

Enjoy the sunshine, saltwater air, and sip a cold one with friends as you take advantage of ample outdoor seating.

Or perhaps you prefer sitting at the back of the pub, on the cushioned bench, enjoying the buzzing atmosphere and live music.

The point is, you really can't go wrong here!
