Entertainment & Activities on Independence of the Seas

Wondering what kind of entertainment and activities will be available to you on Independence of the Seas?

Free Things To Do on Independence of the Seas

There are loads of free things to do onboard Independence of the Seas.

Picture

For The Sporty One...

Okay so due to weather the Flowrider surf simulator is unavailable, bummer. The mini golf would be a bit wet. Now you're looking for an indoor activity on a cruise when it's raining - how about ice skating!?

Ice Skating, you say? On a cruise?!

Which Cruise Line Has an Ice Rink OnBoard?

Of course it's Royal Caribbean! ;)

Did you know that Studio B is not only for shows, but also offers free ice skating sessions?!

Picture
Free Ice Skating in Studio B ❤︎ Independence of the Seas

How much does ice skating cost on Independence of the Seas?

Nothing. It's free!

You will need to reserve a space for a freestyle ice skating session on the Royal Caribbean App.

They will provide you with helmets and ice skates for free.

Do note that there is no instruction and skaters are at all levels, so be careful and have fun!

Pro Tip: We did notice that the team added additional skate sessions during our cruise, so if they are booked up on the app, definitely check back for openings!

For The Book Worm...

Is there a Library on Independence of the Seas?

Yes! There is a quiet library space for the bookworms on board. You can borrow books, complete puzzles, or use one of a couple computers in here.

For The Art BuFF...

Cruises are known for having a lot of art, and I don't mean the art auctions. I mean all over the ship from framed pieces in the stairwells to sculptures in the public spaces and on the pool decks to incredible mosaics like this one:
Picture
Stunning Art Tigers in the Jungle Henri Rousseau Mosaic on Independence of the Seas Cruise Ship

Tigers in the Jungle
Glass mosaic tesserae

The plaque reads:

Picture

Barsanti Marble Bronze Mosaic

This mosaic is inspired by Henri Rosseau's paintings of jungle scenes. His inspiration came from jungle books and the botanical gardens in paris, as he never went abroad. Barsanti has transformed these paintings to images created in glass mosaic.

See if you can find it on your next Independence of the Seas cruise!

For the Theater Buff...

In the Royal Theater, you'll enjoy shows every night including an adaptation of the Broadway classic Grease!

Picture
The Welcome Aboard Show in the Royal Theater ❤︎ Independence of the Seas

Cruises really do give you a bit of everything - your accomodation, meals, activities and entertainment all wrapped into a neat little package!

Ice Capades in Studio B

Since Independence of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean's ships with an ice rink, that means they also have ice shows ready for you!

Incredibly talented performers will glide effortless across the ice, doing all sorts of maneuvers ON ICE SKATES ON A MOVING SHIP! This never ceases to amaze me.

Please don't miss the ice shows.

The ice shows were an unexpected highlight for my 16 year old nephew which is saying a lot ;)

He was eager to see more ice shows on a Symphony of the Seas cruise.

Pro Tip: Bring a sweater or scarf.  It's an ice rink after all - it's cold in there!

For the Sunset Lover...

Free every night of your Independence of the Seas cruise is a never repeated sunset - spectacular whether you're in the middle of the ocean or sailing away from port after a day of exploring.

Picture
Caribbean Sunsets from a Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

I would happily share a sunrise from a cruise ship picture if I had one, but let's be real. I'm on vacation. Little-to-no chance I am up for sunrise. lol

For the Optimist...

To be honest, the weather on our cruise was not spectacular, BUT that gave us an opportunity to see not just a rainbow, but a double rainbow at sea!

Which is pretty special we think... :)
Picture
Double Rainbow at Sea Spotted From Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas ❤︎

We barely scratched the surface here, but you'll always have something to do (if you want) when you're on  Independence of the Seas.

Though we didn't get to try it personally, my brother highly recommended the laser tag, which you can also reserve on the app!

Fish & Ships Review: Was It Worth It?

Fish & Ships Review | Independence of the Seas

Fish & Ships on Royal Caribbean is a complimentary dining option offering, well.. you guessed it fish and chips!

Picture
Fish & Ships on Embarkation Day ❤︎ Independence of the Seas Review

Is Fish & Ships open on Embarkation Day?

Yes. Fish & Ships was open on embarkation day during our 4-night cruise and I recommend grabbing a bite here on day one if you want to avoid a busy windjammer buffet.

Fish & Ships Menu | Independence of the Seas

In the past, Fish & Ships was a paid casual dining option, but for the last few years it has been free, aside from an up-charge for a Fried Lobster Tail basket & chips (fries) at $12.

I'd like to try the fried lobster tail basket next time and let you know if it's worth the splurge ;)

Picture
Fish and Ships menu on Independence of the Seas

What's on the menu at Fish & Ships?

For free, you can enjoy:
  • Fish & Chips with tartar sauce
  • Chicken Fingers & Chips with honey mustard
  • Fried Shrimp & Chips with cocktail sauce
  • Crispy Fish Sandwich - lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce

Fish & Ships Independence of the Seas Food Pics

We started with one order of fish & chips and chicken fingers without fries (gotta pace yourself on a cruise lol).

Picture
Fish and Chips + Chicken Fingers on Independence of the Seas ❤︎ Fish & Ships Review

Chicken Fingers (no chips)

We requested no chips with the chicken fingers. There is a classic, thick batter on these chicken fingers.

Picture
Chicken Fingers ❤︎ Royal Caribbean Food Pics

Fish & Chips

The British style fish and chips comes with thick cut chips (french fries) and battered white fish.

Picture
Fish and Chips ❤︎ Cruise Food Pics

The batter was light and delightfully crunchy after being freshly deep fried - this could be dangerous!

Please note: I saw a review online indicating that the fish is battered in chicken finger batter, which is clearly not British style fish, and I think that must have been an anomaly as we did not experience that at all during our cruise.

Please try Fish & Ships for yourself, the batter is delicious! :)

Picture
Poolside dining on Independence of the Seas at Fish & Ships

Royal Caribbean Fish & Ships Review Independence of the Seas - Is it Worth It?

Absolutely, it's worth it! It's free - how could it not be worth it?! ;p

No, but seriously, Fish & Ships is one of my favorite complimentary dining locations on Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

Of the chicken fingers, fish, and fried shrimp the fried fish is easily our favorite and the best thing on the Fish & Ships menu, in our opinion.

Fried shrimp take second place, followed by chicken fingers, but I bet all the kiddies love those unlimited chicken fingers and while they do, the parents can enjoy something a bit more "grown up" with the fish and shrimp!

Which Royal Caribbean Ships have Fish & Ships?

Fish & Ships is included in your cruise fare and is located on the pool deck of Independence of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

I wish more ships had this casual dining option!

No need to stop the poolside fun when you're hungry, just send a delegate over to Fish & Ships and have a taste of the UK on your cruise! ;)

Connecting Balcony Cabin Tour & Review | Independence of the Seas Review

Are you considering a connecting ocean view balcony on Royal Caribbean and wondering if it's worth it?

This stateroom photo review will help you decide. :)

When Are Rooms Ready On a Cruise?

On Royal Caribbean, staterooms are usually ready by 1 pm on embarkation day, but the exact time can vary. Very often your room is ready even earlier!

Picture
Independence of the Seas Balcony Cabin

What is a Balcony Guarantee (GTY) Room?

On this 4-night Independence of the Seas cruise, we booked a balcony guarantee room.

That means the cruise line would choose our room and it could be located anywhere on the ship, but would definitely have a balcony.

In our case, we were assigned a connecting balcony with no obstructions. .

Connecting Balcony Cabin Tour and Photo Review

This is a view of an oceanview balcony room on Independence of the Seas as seen from the bathroom door.

Notice the door reflected in the mirror.

Plenty of space to do work (I hope you don't have to!) or do your make-up before dinner :)

Here you can see the connecting balcony room from in front of the balcony doors looking toward the entrance.

The door seen in the previous picture is behind that curtain on the left.

Lots of Mirrors for 'Fit CHecks

The room feels spacious with a huge floor-to-ceiling mirror on the left, and a very large mirror at the desk/vanity area.

Picture
Plenty of storage and full length mirror on Independence of the Seas | Royal Caribbean Cruise Review

The glass coffee table, while somewhat a brave choice, does make the room appear more spacious since it's almost invisible, you know?

Picture
Couch in Independence of the Seas Connecting Balcony Room

are there couches in the rooms on independence of the seas?

Yes. We had a couch in our connecting ocean view balcony stateroom on Independence of the Seas. This couch did not turn into a bed.

Picture

At first peek into the bathroom, you'll likely be happy to see a shower stall and no shower curtain. Not too many ships still have shower curtains these days, but there are some.

Picture

Inside the shower is an adjustable shower head, a complimentary combination body wash/shampoo, and a clothes line.

Pro Tip: Bring your own shampoo/conditioner as this soap can be a bit rough on hair imo.

The bathroom was plenty spacious with a tiled floor and another generously sized mirror.

Let's head back toward the balcony again!

You can opt for two twin sized beds or have them made into a queen, which we did.

Picture
Independence of the Seas Balcony Sailing Out of Miami, Florida

Even on an overcast day, a balcony gives you beautiful natural light and the chance to breath in that fresh ocean air without leaving your stateroom!

Can you hear the people next door in a connecting balcony?

It depends. In nearly any room, on a ship or in a hotel, there is a chance you will hear your neighbors.

On this cruise we did hear our neighbors a bit from time to time, but more because it was a group of ladies excited to be on their long weekend cruise and less specifically because we had a connecting room.

Picture
Kicking back on the balcony for sail away | Independence of the Seas Review

It definitely didn't stop us from enjoying 4 night cruise out of Miami!

Is a connecting balcony worth it?

A connecting balcony is a wonderful option for families traveling together. The door between the rooms can be unlocked by the room steward and left open if you so choose, allowing your family to go back and forth between the two rooms as needed.

This can be a more affordable option than a suite for a family in many cases!

If you're not traveling with the stateroom you're connected to, don't worry, the door will remain locked the entire time.

Picture
Balconies are made for moments like these :)

For us, it was worth it to be able to enjoy moments like this!

As we booked a balcony guarantee, we had a discounted rate for giving up choosing the room location.

Obviously, you'd rather not have a connecting room if you don't need it. But at the same time, it doesn't really matter. We were happy to have a balcony without an obstruction! That was a big win! :)

Should you book a balcony guarantee cabin?

If you're looking to save some money, this can be a good option, but you need to consider a few things:
  • if you will be greatly disappointed by an obstructed view or connecting room, don't do it.
  • if you have accessibility needs, you may want to choose a room closest to elevators or places you intend to frequent
  • if you are very concerned about having a cabin "midship" for movement concerns, pay extra to choose your room.

Ocean View Room Pictures | Symphony of the Seas

If the above apply to you, a guarantee cabin may not be the best option for you.

On the other hand, if you are willing to take the chance, you should go into it expecting to get the lowest possible option (obstructed in a less desirable location) and then be excited if you get randomly assigned anything above that.

If your expectations are set properly, you will be happy with a balcony gty. :)

When Was Independence of the Seas Built?

Independence of the Seas was built in 2008 and was "amped" (refurbished) in 2018 under the Royal Amplified program.

5 Great places to eat in Ajuda

6/15/2025

Most known for the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda (National Palace of Ajuda), Ajuda is an often overlooked Lisbon neighborhood with fewer tourists and plenty of nice views.

Picture
Views from Ajuda at Night

Nestled between infamous Belém waterfront and Parque Florestal de Monsanto, a huge park full of trails and greenery right in the heart of Lisbon, Ajuda is low key with a combination of grit and charm, not to mention some surprisingly great restaurants.

In this article we will share 5 Ajuda restaurants we tried on this week in Lisbon trip as well as a few outliers just for fun. ;)

Tlaloc un rincón mexicano

One thing many Americans miss when they move to Portugal is actually Mexican food. Great tacos are not especially easy to find in Portugal.

At Tlaloc Un Rincon Mexicano you can scratch that itch with birria tacos, tinga tacos, horchata, and do not forget the tres leches cake.

Di Amici by Pizza em Casa

Lisbon has some fabulous Pizza places and we really enjoyed our visit to Amici. Heads up, sparkling sangria may or may not have some limoncello and the 'nduja pizza is a must!

Churrasqueira do Marques

Traditional Portuguese grilled chicken and pork are such simple meals, but when executed well leave you so satisfied. That's the experience we had at Churrasqueira Marques.

Food Hub

When you want quick and affordable Kebabs in Ajuda try Food Hub. For around 5.50 euro at the time of our visit you can fill up on a Doner Kebab menu which comes with fries and a drink!

Santo Graal Burger & Grill

Santo Graal (Holy Grail) Burger and Grill serves up gourmet bugers and steaks, crispy fries, and even a blonde and red house ipa.

Fiesta Restro And Snack Bar

Okay so this restaurant is not in Ajuda, it's in Benfica neighborhood and we hit it up after a medical appointment at Hospital da Luz in Amadora.

Hilariously, Fiesta Restro and Snack Bar is not at all a Mexican restaurant, but in fact a spot where you can enjoy Nepalese, Indian, and Portuguese food.

Don't skip the sparkling sangria, pani puri, and momos - they were highlights of this Lisbon trip!

Everest Curry & Sekuwa Corner

This was an Uber Eats order after a long convention day, so it came from the other side of Lisbon to our Ajuda airbnb. The restaurant was running a lot of BOGO offers, so we ended up with way too much food and it lasted for 2.5 meals!

We ordered Jeera rice, chicken stuffed naan, thai curry, and butter chicken. Everything was okay overall. The butter chicken was the best dish we ordered.

Pasteis de Belem

Belem is a nice walk from Ajuda and you can try two of the most famous Pastel de Nata establishments including Pasteis de Belem.

MoMo Express

If you're arriving into Lisbon or departing via Oriente Station, you'd be remiss if you skipped Momo Express food truck. Tasty Nepalese momos, flavorful samosas (go veggie for this one!) and chai of this caliber, you'll struggle to find outside of Asia.

N'ice Cream Review - Armacao de Pera Algarve

5/19/2025

Is anything sweeter than an ice cream cone after a day at the beach in Portugal?

Picture
Ice Cream With a View | Armacao de Pera Food Blog

After a leisurely stroll through  Armacao de Pera  with our parents, an ice cream cone seemed the perfect choice to end the outing on a sweet note.

We stopped in at N'ice Cream in  Armacao de Pera. N'ice cream has several locations across central algarve including Albufeira, Portimao, and  Armacao de Pera .

N'ice Cream Flavors

Wondering what ice cream flavors are popular in Portugal?

You'll find a combination of classic standbys like Chocolate, Coffee Ice Cream, and even Oreo Ice Cream.

Picture
Ice Cream Flavors at Armacao De Pera Beach

N'ice cream has a lot of candy bar flavored ice creams too like Bounty, Snickers, After Eight and M&Ms.

Picture
Gelados Saborosos Praia de Armacao de Pera
In Portugal, you will almost always find Nutella flavored treats as well.

Uniquely Portuguese Ice Cream Flavors

One fun thing about N'ice Cream in Algarve is they tend to have some uniquely Portuguese Ice Cream flavors.

Figo c/ Amêndoa Gelado (Fig and Almond)

For example, the Algarve is an agricultural region known for delicious juicy figs and bountiful crops of almonds. So a fig and almond ice cream is spot on!

Picture
Gelado com sabor Figo com amêndoa

Dom Rodrigo Ice Cream (Egg Yarn and Almond)

Dom Rodrigo is a traditional dessert from the Algarvian town of Lagos. It's made with "egg yarn"which sounds so weird, but it's egg yolks and sugar so think sweet and rich with the texture of thin coconut shreds.

Picture
Gelado com sabor Dom Rodrigo
In addition to these ice cream flavors you can find Pastel de Nata (famous custard tart of Portugal), and Perna de Pau. (Meaning wooden leg in Portuguese).

Perna de Pau is an ice cream on a stick you can buy in grocery stores across Portugal featuring a pirate on the package with, you guessed it, a wooden leg.  It's vanilla ice cream with stripes of strawberry 'jelly' and the outside is dipped in chocolate.

N'ice Cream Armacao de Pera

Where We Went:
N'Ice Cream in Armação de Pêra is located at R. Sra. dos Navegantes 13, 8365-184 Armação de Pêra, Portugal

There is an outdoor counter to walk up to and order your ice cream. Around the side there is outdoor seating. There is also a spacious indoor seating area. Bathrooms are available, but located down a number of stairs.

Armacao de Pera Beach Ice Cream

It really is hard to beat ice cream with this view, isn't it?

We opted for the very Portuguese (and very sweet!) Dom Rodrigo and Fig & Almond flavors in a waffle cone.

Which flavors will you try?

Manhattan Ny Pizza Fort Lauderdale Review

As one does when arriving to a hotel late after a long travel day, we ordered a pizza. Manhattan NY Pizza was nearby and touted their pizza being made with dough from NYC so we were intrigued.

One ridiculously long wait and $24 later ... and we were a lot less intrigued... Hopefully this subpar pizza was a fluke for this local shop and if you order you'll have a better experience, especially if you dine in and can eat it when it's piping hot. :)

hyatt place cruise port hotel review

We were happy with our experience at Hyatt Place in Fort Lauderdale near Port Everglades. There is nothing particularly exciting about this hotel, but there doesn't need to be - you're going on a cruise! That's the exciting part of staying here.

The hotel is in a good location and offers the amenities you need for a night before a cruise - a place to sleep and free breakfast. Hyatt Place also offers a free airport shuttle and they do have a cruise port shuttle available  from the hotel for a fee that you can sign up for on arrival. We opted to use Uber for convenience and it being collectively cheaper for us rathe r than pay a per person rate with the shuttle van coming at a set time. Choice is yours!

Our hotel night was totally free thanks to Chase Ultimate Rewards Points. We used 8,000 points transferred from our Chase Sapphire card. See the Best Chase Sapphire Sign Up Bonus Here so you can get free hotel stays too! ;)

On days when we did not order the free continental breakfast room service delivery on Sun Princess and we didn't go to the main dining room or buffet for breakfast, we could still enjoy a selection of breakfast foods all day at the Americana Diner!

Brunch in the americana diner

americana diner menu sun princess

As a quick recap, you do not need reservations for the Americana Diner and everything on the menu is available every day except the bottom right corner where it says "Tonight's Special". Those items rotate each night to include a few options from the main dining room menu in addition to the default Diner classics.
Picture

The buttermilk pancake stack came with blueberry jam, chocolate, streaky bacon, maple syrup, and a torched banana. In this case we requested only syrup and bacon along with the triple pancake stack and torched bananas. The bacon was missing! Oops :)

diner's hash .

For the Diner's Hash you could choose between salt beef and halloumi (cheese). Your preference would be served with home-style potatoes, fried egg, roasted bell peppers, and griddled onions.

Let's see how it turned out!
Picture
Diner's Hash | Sun Princess Food Reviews
This was quite a potato-forward dish with the diced potatoes as well as two large roasted potato wedges. The homestyle potatoes tasted ketchup-y to me and while I wasn't the hugest fan of that I suppose it fits with the diner theme.

Overall solid brunch!

strawberry shortcake milkshake.

Since we are attempting to try (nearly) everything on the Americana Diner menu, this seemed like a good opportunity for the Strawberry Shortcake Milkshake!

Described as strawberry ice cream, fresh strawberries and milk, topped with whipped cream and meringue pieces. I would be surprised if this milkshake actually has fresh strawberries in it, nevertheless it was super tasty!

The meringue pieces on top were a great touch and much better than the donut garnish of the coffee and donuts milkshake we tried previously, imo.

The Princess Cruises App shows you all of the activities for the day and allows you to bookmark your favorites. A complimentary liquor tasting on a cruise is pretty common and will be held in the duty-free liquor store on board. On Sun Princess the duty free liquor store is called Fine Spirits & Treats and in this shop they held the free liquor tasting as well as an educational whiskey tasting.

I do recommend coming on time and only lingering in the shop if you are ready to make a purchase or else it can get awkward. Of course the point of these events are to generate sales and the crew members need to make sales to perform well.

We had the opportunity to try a unique Cotswolds single malt whisky.

Also wanted to give a shoutout to the beautiful tile design inside this duty-free shop on Sun Princess. I really loved this design and it suited my huaraches nicely, don't you think?! :p

pizza & Dogs on the Pool deck

From the shop on deck 7 we headed up to deck 9 - the pool deck - to walk around and enjoy the sea views, but let me tell you it's hard to walk past the Princess Pizzeria without checking the menu and grabbing a slice.

The special of the day was Four-Cheese pizza (fresh mozzarella, fontina, provolone, and dolcelatte).
* This 4 cheese slice was the best pizza we ate on Sun Princess!

So happy we grabbed this slice, although after that day we never managed to catch it again which was for sure a bummer.

Feedback for Princess Cruises: Serve the Four-Cheese pizza more often! :o)

Hot dogs on sun princess

There are several hot dog choices available at the grill on Sun Princess.

You can order the hot dog as suggested on the menu which includes mustard, relish, and fried onions, or you can alter it how you prefer such as with just fried onions and ketchup.

They always serve the fries in the cute little baskets and the trays are perfectly picnic-y with the red and white checkered liners.

Princess crew call chat review

This feels like a good moment to give some feedback on the Princess Crew Call Chat.

On the Princess Cruises App you have access to "Crew Call Chat" 24 hours per day. This is a really great feature and allows you to ask questions and receive answers via text rather than having to make a phone call or go down to the desk in person. Love this feature!

The quality of the responses, though, was a bit hit or miss. For instance, on the schedule there was a "Craft" in the Horizon's Dining Room on deck 7. No further details. So I decided to ask the CrewCall Chat what the craft was.

Picture
Arts & Craft Activity on Sun Princess

Their response was to list out several activities that afternoon (not helpful) and then tell me to look at the schedule in my room (not helpful) and then send the generic I'm-closing-out-this-ticket message to finish the chat (corporate box ticking at it's finest).

Picture
Crew Call Chat

I found this a little bit annoying to be honest as my question was not answered, I was clearly already familiar with the schedule in the room and on the app as I asked about a specific event listed on there. In the end they basically told me to go to the dining room and find out lol.

Picture
Not super helpful CrewCall Chat

Imagine I had mobility issues. It would have been really nice if someone could have told me what this activity entails (like.. is this a children's activity or something adults would also enjoy) before I make my way with great effort across the ship. Do you see what I mean?

I truly don't know if the people responding to the Chat are on the ship and what information/resources they have access to, but on a number of occasions I found the Crew Chat to be less than helpful, unfortunately. Always giving an honest review over here.

Crew Chat is a great app feature which could use some improvements.

complimentary laundry on sun princess

When you sail on Princess with Elite Status one of the best benefits is free laundry. It was really nice to return to our room and find our laundry washed, pressed, folded, or hanging. Especially on a 14 night cruise, having complimentary laundry is game changing. This is one way Princess Cruise Lines rewards loyalty to their line.

Still, there are things you may wish to consider in order to decide whether or not to send your laundry out on a cruise.

Princess Elite Cruisers enjoy complimentary laundry!
Princess does have laundry rooms for public use throughout the ship. Many who do not wish to hand wash their clothes on vacation will make use of these laundry facilities on a cruise ship.

Self service laundry is a top rated feature of Princess by many cruisers that other lines should take note of.

dinner in the sun princess main dining room

For some reason we missed snapping a pic of the dinner menu in the main dining room this night. Must have been distracted by visions of crab cakes and beef Wellington ...  At any rate, here's what we tried!

Crab Cake

A crab cake with some lump crab meat as seen in the photo wearing a hat of greens, one ruby slipper and resting atop a bed of aioli.
I really enjoyed the crab cake and accompanying sauce. We did find it a bit strange, however, that a breaded and fried item would be sat on top of a creamy sauce, rather than the sauce being a garnish along side. We found this odd because 1. it makes the bottom of the crab cake soggy and 2. if you are averse to the accompanying sauce now the whole bottom of your crab cake is tainted by it. I could see this causing some cruisers to become crab cakes themselves. :p

Feedback for Princess Cruises: Sauces beside fried foods, please and thanks! :)

Prosciutto & Melon with endive + Arugula

Here are two different plates of the same dish for consistency comparison. This prosciutto and melon medley accented with a bit of endive and arugula is such a prime example of how simple dishes can be outstanding. With a few flavorful ingredient you have all you need!
This melon and prosciutto salad would make for an easy appetizer at a dinner party!

Roasted pear salad

A roasted pear salad was hard to pass up and I am so pleased I didn't skip it. I'm a big fan of fruit on salads and this salad offered a brilliant mix of colors and textures between the leaf lettuce, roasted red pepper slices, cooked pears, and sprouts on top. Beneath the sprouts you could find crumbled blue cheese - always complimentary to sweet pears!

This salad is another cruise food worth re-creating at home!

beef wellington

Beef Wellington is at the top of the list of foods I'm eager to order on a cruise. It's such a fancy meal that is more laborious to make than we care to do very often (literally probably 10 years ago was the last time), but when executed well is such a delight.
Picture
Beef Wellington on Sun Princess
While the plating was lovely I was surprisingly underwhelmed by this under seasoned and overcooked Beef Wellington on Sun Princess. Later on in the cruise a waiter gave us the tip to order one step rarer than you want because that's the way to get the cook you want on it. So I guess we should have ordered medium-rare?

I hope this is a fluke, but I'd love to know how your Wellington was on your last cruise?

coconut cake with raspberry sauce

At the waiters recommendation I ordered the coconut cake with raspberry sauce, but found it a bit boring. The cake was on the dense and dry side. The filling was okay and it really needed more raspberry sauce.
Picture

Chocolate tart

The chocolate tart with vanilla crème anglaise was as rich and chocolatey as you can imagine by looking at the photo. The crust had an interesting texture reminiscent of the oatmeal-y nature of no-bakes, but more finely ground and drier.

Iced cointreau souffle

The iced cointreau soufflé was a last minute addition and it was the highlight of this night's dessert! If you like cointreau / citrus flavor definitely order this unique cold soufflé!

How we spent one day in Chania Cruise port | crete travel blog | sun Princess Mediterranean Cruise with greek isles, italy, & Turkey - Day 4

8/12/2024

On this Princess Cruise Blog we visit the Mediterranean Port of Chania in Crete, Greece and share some things to do in Crete cruise port including souvenir ideas!

Day 4 of our Sun Princess Mediterranean Cruise landed us on the Greek Island of Crete.

This was, in fact, an alteration to our original itinerary. Santorini was our original port of call, but it was changed to Chania, Crete.

New Cruiser FYI: If you have never cruised before you should be made aware that ports of call are subject to change. If there is a safety issue, capacity issue, or other unforeseen circumstance a cruise line may stop at a different port or have another sea day.

To start our day on Crete, we ordered the free room service breakfast on Princess. We ordered 2 danishes, 1 pizza muffin, an egg and cheese English muffin, a fruit plate, and bananas along with coffee, of course!

We mused that the "Welcome to Souda Port Chania" sign must have been there since Paul's day based on how worn and barely visible the words were.

Crete Cruise Port FAQs

Is Chania a tender port?
It can be, but on our Mediterannean cruise we did not tender on Crete with Princess Cruise Lines. Check your cruise itinerary or contact your cruise line to confirm if you will be tendering or docking on Crete.

Where do cruise ships dock in Crete?
The majority of cruise ships will dock in Iraklion (Heraklion) port or Souda (Chania) when visiting Crete for the day.

Where does Sun Princess dock in Chania, Greece?
On our cruise, Sun Princess docked at Souda Port. Souda is the name of the port in Chania.

Also note the blue dot on the map below to indicate where Sun Princess was docked in Crete.

Cruise Travel Tip

Cruise Travel Tip: On Sun Princess, there were large screens along the path to exit the ship on port days which featured contact information for the Port Agent. Make sure to snap a photo of the Port Agent Contact Information. It will usually be in your printed daily schedule as well.

If you run into any trouble while in Port, including if you're running late, (ps. please don't run late getting back to the ship!) it will be essential to contact this number for help. It is well known that cruise ships will leave passengers who aren't back on board in time, so always get back to your ship with plenty of time if you are doing your own excursions.

Still, 'unexpected events overtake us all' and if you find yourself in that situation, call the port agent right away and let them know. No guarantee the ship can wait or will wait, but you stand a better chance if you've communicated and they know what's going on.

Our one day in chania cruise port

Shuttle Bus to Chania Town

Chania is a very walkable and cute port to visit, however you cannot quickly walk to Chania from Souda Port. It would be quite a long walk, something to the tune of 2 hours.

Needless to say, we were very happy that Princess had a complimentary shuttle bus from Souda Port which dropped us off in Chania near the Municipal Garden of Chania.
Picture

The bus displayed a sign in the front window which said "Sun Princess Shuttle".

How long is the shuttle from Souda Port to Chania?

The ride was between 15 and 20 minutes and gave a good opportunity to check out some key phrases in Greek from The Turquoise Collection.

A walk through chania, crete

After getting off the shuttle I snapped a pic of this monument and area which was under construction. As it turns out this is the entrance to the Agora, the Municipal Market of Chania.

It is currently being restored and while it was anticipated to reopen in summer 2024, the expectation is now at least spring of 2025.
Picture
Chania's Agora, or Marketplace, is currently being renovated. A Spring 2025 re-opening is anticipated | Crete Travel Blog

As we walked along the perimeter of the Municipal Gardens of Chania to reach the coastal area, we met two of the loveliest elderly ladies at the cart.  We learned via google translate, it was their custom every week on this day to be there. Modern day Anas to warm our hearts. Although we couldn't speak the same language we instantly felt the special bond that is such a treasure.

Next we popped into a grocery store to take a peak around. Fully enjoyed this coffee grinder. Nothing like freshly ground coffee beans!

Walking around Chania is enjoyable. From wide shopping and dining streets like this one ..

Unique Greek Gift Ideas on Crete

Leather goods make a great souvenir from Crete. This leather shop called Baba Yank Handcraft Leather Workshop sold leather belts, leather purses and backpacks.

Do you see the green and yellow leather bags in the photo? This backpack style is called Vourgiali or Vourgia.

According to their website, this style of bag is used by Cretan shepherds and farmers to store their daily meals. Vourgiali can also be found in Cyprus and the Dodecanese islands. This leather backpack would be a really cool souvenir from Crete - it's useful, it's unique, it supports a local artisan, and it has cultural significance and an interesting story.

The tall walking sticks / shepherds crooks caught my eye as well. I was curious how much they cost. These cool walking sticks were 80 euros, but I imagine they will be hard to pack in your checked luggage. lol

The store Cream Of Hippocrates also looked to have some unique items. Bags made traditionally on a handloom, homemade creams, not to mention books and toys.

Walking past the next store, something immediately caught my eye - the colorful coin pouches inside the doorway. They looked Thai, without a doubt.

This cute boutique, Wipa Silk Shop, has loads of cute dresses and accessories including many authentic Thai goods. It was a highlight of the day to chat with the owner, a kind Thai woman.

Please stop in at Wipa when you are in Chania!

Another great souvenir from Greece would be handmade leather sandals. Typically the sandals will have the family name stamped in the footbed. I much prefer this dignified way to acknowledge the maker than the overly branded items popular today, which can be tacky.

There are plenty of restaurants to dine at along the Old Venetian Port where you'll have a view of the water and the Lighthouse of Chania.

What's so special about Chania's Lighthouse?
It's said to be the oldest lighthouse in the world so we thought it worth the walk down the long mole (the stone pier leading to the lighthouse), but not without first taking in the views.

Picture
Chania's old lighthouse in the distance

Before walking down the pier, take a peak around the corner of this stone wall to see glimpses of the Chanion Gulf in the Sea of Crete.

The walk to the lighthouse starts out well. The walkway is spacious and affords views of the boats docked along the shore with the Venetian shipyards in the background.

Picture

The mountains made a majestic backdrop for the Venetian Shipyards at the Chania Marina. Originally they were to build and maintain Venetian galleys (a type of boat that relied mostly on oars and was used for warfare, trade, and piracy in the European seas. source). Later when the Ottomans invaded Crete, the Shipyards actually became storehouses for food.

Sadly at this point on the journey to the lighthouse, things took a turn. I have to say the walk to the Chania lighthouse is not for the faint of heart on a blisteringly hot day.

The old sea wall going out to the lighthouse has sort of an upper level and lower level. At one point we took stairs to the upper level, which was more narrow and because I started to feel uneasy we turned back in order to continue on the lower level a la Proverbs 22:3.

Shortly thereafter my sandal proceeds to break in an irreparable way while we are on the middle of this long walk to the lighthouse in the blazing heat. We had no choice but to turn back and let me tell you it was an even longer walk back trying to hold onto my flipflop by scrunching up my toes while walking.

Tired, overheated, frustrated, and hungry we hobbled our way to a place called Tostachi.

Kalitsounia with honey - Dessert

For dessert we decided to try the kalitsounia with honey. This is "handmade phyllo pastry with mizithra cheese with Cretan thyme honey & cinnamon"

By the way, if you're wondering what is mizithra?! It's a homemade traditional cheese made from goats milk.

The best part of tostachi.

Chef Stelios, shown in photo wearing his apron, was the absolute highlight of our visit to Tostachi. He was passionate about all of the food he made, eager to explain each menu item, happy to take a video while he made our dessert and show it to us, and he just had a warmth and kindness about him that is rare to see these days.

A Spring weekend in Lisbon, Portugal

8/7/2024

In June we made a quick weekend trip to Lisbon for an assembly. We arrived at Sete Rios Bus Station in Lisbon around 3pm after a 3-ish hour bus ride.

The Uber ride from the bus station in Lisbon to our hotel in the Saldanha neighborhood was 3.88€

We were absolutely famished after the bus ride when I remembered we had a few snacks left in our bag. A lovely family from Hawaii had been visiting Odemira when we happened to visit for a talk one day. They were sharing these little tastes of Hawaii with everyone we meet! Edible gifts are the best - such a fun way to share a piece of your homeland!

We were eating these macadamia nuts when there was a knock on our hotel room door - an employee stopping by to help resolve an issue.

Once everything was sorted and we had done a room tour for you, we unpacked and were ready to walk to dinner - trying to find the best pizza in Lisbon!

On our walk to Forno d oro, we discovered the Lisbon Book Fair was taking place. (Feira do Livro Lisboa 2024)

If you're wondering how people dress in Portugal, I'd say this family is a good example!

Cute and comfy dresses paired with trainers or other supportive footwear are popular outfits among women and girls in Lisbon.

People on a whole tend to dress nicely in Portugal.

Portugal Travel Tip: public Recycling and Trash

As you walk around Lisbon and Portugal in general, you will notice public recycling areas (ecoponto). The bins in this photo are actually on the small side. Here are some things to know about recycling in Portugal.

The bins are color coded and when you look at the packaging you want to recycle, it will indicate which color bin you need to place it in. Green (verde) is for glass, Blue (Azul) is for paper and cardboard, Yellow (amarelo)  is for metal and plastic. Lixo means trash, as in regular garbage.

By the way, do you see the tree behind those recycling and garbage bins? Do you know what it is?
It's a pomegranate tree! So cool that in a few months, right on the side of a Lisbon sidewalk will be fresh pomegranate fruits!

Picture
Lisbon is a city of hills. You will get your steps in, with ease!

It's really hard to get a sense of it, but this was quite an uphill walk. When you travel to Lisbon you need to pack good walking shoes. The best travel shoes or sandals would not only be comfortable and provide anatomical support, but also have no-slip soles because the beautiful little tiled sidewalks can be quite slick!

My mom just did a multi-brand side-by-side try on of the most popular comfortable footwear for women and this brand is her hands down favorite to date.

Finally we made it to the popular Forno d'Oro pizza restaurant in Lisbon!!

Entering the Lisbon Book Fair 2024 | Lisbon Travel Blog

As this is a travel blog with a food focus, I have to show you a few of the fair foods in Portugal and their respective prices.

This food truck called Capricciosa sold Rolotini's (pizza rolls) for 7.5€. If you get the "Menu" it's a combo including a pizza roll and a drink for 8€.

Farturas are a popular fair food in summer in Portugal and you will see little stalls pop up along the beach boardwalks as well as events like this book fair.

What are farturas?
Some describe farturas as a Portuguese dessert which combines everything you love about a funnel cake with a churro and as I type that out I'm wondering how it is that we still haven't tried these for ourselves?!

Farturas, a popular Portuguese fair food | Portugal Food Blog

Growing up in an area where summer sweet corn is abundant, you don't realize how good an ear of corn is and how many people don't have access to such a simple summer time pleasure. That makes it a real novelty item.

Here at corn club you can order some gourmet corn for 5€

Picture

Of course this classic moment came immediately to mind.

There was a large seating area set up at the Lisbon book fair where you could enjoy your fair foods while looking out over Parque Eduardo VII.

Picture
Lisboa's Parque Eduardo VII at night

As we left the book fair, I had to stop and take a picture of this incredible mural at the espaço Porto Editora | Bertrand Editora. What a detailed piece of artwork! I couldn't help but think of my talented Italian friend and illustrator Miriam who at times creates works in this style!

Apparently there were various scheduled talks and discussions during the Lisbon book fair. I was surprised to stumble upon live music. We stopped and listened for a few minutes.

Portugal really has a lot of family friendly events like this and most of them are free or very affordable!

You're never far from something interesting to see whether it's the sticker collection on the back of a street sign or beautiful tiles adding character to a building.

On day two of this weekend in Lisbon we had our scheduled assembly program all day. The hotel had  little chocolate umbrellas at the reception the night before and I saved mine for a hearty breakfast. ;)

We Uber-ed to the program and I have to remind you that while your default mode may be to pull out your phone to pass the time in the car ... YOU'RE IN LISBON! Look around! =) There are lots of interesting things to see, beautiful architecture etc.

After a day of learning and socializing we were ready to eat! We discovered a unique restaurant in walking distance from our hotel - an Armenian Restaurant!

At this restaurant I ate something that I consider to be a perfect food. :) Check out all the Armenian and Georgian foods we tried in our Ararate Restaurant Review.

It was now day 3 and we had a 12pm hotel checkout with a 12:30pm bus scheduled. We had plenty of time so we decided to check out the popular and very cute brunch spot Hygge Kaffe.

If you love aesthetic food pics and trendy brunch dishes, check out our review of Hygge which my dad described as "honest and sincere". =)

An Instagrammable Brunch in Lisbon

We nearly missed our bus, our uber drop off time was 12:28 for a bus that leaves at 12:30. So we ran as fast as we could and just barely made it on in time.

We spent the bus ride catching our breath, filled with gratitude for everything that made this such a special weekend.

We are on a very serious mission to find the best Pizza in Portugal.

We know your time in Portugal is probably short and you want to make the most of it. We also know you're almost guaranteed to want Pizza at some point on your trip because .... pizza. ;)

So once again, we are doing the responsible and kind thing - trying as many pizza restaurants as our wallet and waistlines can afford so you know where to go!

Forno D'Oro Pizzeria in Lisbon

On a summer weekend in Lisbon we walked from our hotel to a really great pizza place about one mile away - Forno d'oreo. haha okay no, it's not called that, but autocorrect made it the Oreo Oven instead of Gold Oven and I'm leaving it because just imagine the possibilities of a place called Oreo Oven....

Okay. Back to Pizza.
Picture
Forno d'Oro Pizzeria in Lisbon
It was a bold move to show up to a popular Lisbon restaurant like Forno d'Oro on a Saturday night without a reservation. We acknowledged right away that we had no reservation, hoping to curry favor, and wondered if they might acquiesce to letting us have a table. It didn't seem super promising, but I guess the fact that this post exists is a spoiler, isn't it? :p

The guy let us know that we could have a table if we would be done by 21:15 (9:15pm) when they presumably had a reservation. It was about 19:45 (7:45pm). So we had an hour and a half - that seemed reasonable!

Travel Tip Related to Time (Not a Time Travel Tip, that's different): Get used to the 24h clock here. Medical people - you'll be fine, you're already used to it. Everyone else, you'll probably be doing small math in your head to work out the times. hehe

Inside Forno d'oro

As you would expect, there is a literal glistening, golden oven. Our table was quite near to it. Don't you love getting to see the pizzas being slid off the peel into the oven and pulled out a few minutes later?

Dinner and a show!

Be sure not to miss the industrial sized mixer in the corner - can you imagine how much glorious pizza dough that makes at one time?!

Forno d'oro Seasonal Pizza Menu

It's great to see a Pizze Stagionali (Seasonal Pizza in Italian) menu because it means the pizzeria is taking advantage of local ingredients that are currently in season like Portugal's incredible figs.

How much are speciality Pizza's in Lisbon?
The seasonal Pizzas at Forno d'Oro are 16.95 euro - June 2024 pricing. That's about $18.40 for a premium pizza at a top restaurant.

Forno d'oro Menu

If you're looking at a more classic pizza like a Margherita, it will run you 11.95 euro or about $13.
For those not interested in Pizza there are appetizers you may like as well as a selection of pastas.

The bevvies

Beer is always a perfect match for pizza so we ordered one Benediktner Dunkel from Germany (2.95)
Picture

And one Portuguese craft beer called Letra D. I have a hard time passing up a red ale. It was a splash out at 5.50, but I had no idea what a fancy experience I was in for..

The waiter opened the bottle, poured a little splash into the glass and had me taste it as if it was some sort of expensive wine. I hate the attention and feel incredibly awkward so I give it the fastest sip and thumbs up ever so we could move on.
Picture

And move on we did... to this single bottle of beer chilling in a table-side ice bucket like it was champagne or something. Que fancy. This had me cracking up the whole time. I was also like.. does he come back to top off my glass or do I do it? lol. Yeah, he didn't come back for that. I did it. :p

Side Note: Cerveja Letra is a microbrewery from Vila Verde in northern Portugal. They also have locations in Braga and Porto. If you're in the area, stop by one of their taprooms. High recommendation.

Margherita  DOP

As you know, we almost always get a margherita pizza at a new pizzeria as a baseline. You can obviously tell from the pic below that it was not a bad decision. ;)

Fichi, Prosciutto e gorgonzola pizza

We have developed another condition where when we see a pizza with fig, prosciutto, and gorgonzola on a menu, we almost cannot pass it up. We have had an incredible fig pizza in Lisbon before and it's just such a journey you go on that you want to keep coming back to experience again and again.

I mean just look at this! Quite generous with the prosciutto ham, wouldn't you agree?

Can you see the slices of sweet figs under the prosciutto blanket?

And of course, a peek underneath!

This is a delicious seasonal pizza. You get the texture and chew of the prosciutto as well as its saltiness, added to the sweet figs, and the savory flavor of gorgonzola cheese - it's soo yummy! The only thing we missed was a touch of heat! (hot honey drizzle anyone!?)

With two solid pizzas devoured we still had some time left on the clock before we had to vacate our table so we opted for coffee and dessert!

Espresso & Tiramisu

Forno d'Oro in Lisbon serves a lovely Italian Espresso by Illy (1.40). You can order Illy Italian Coffee in the US anytime, by the way, if you'd like to try it.

They serve a beautiful tiramisu as well. We just shared the one (5.50) and it was a perfect finishing touch to this outstanding meal in Lisbon!
In a traditional show of hospitality a complimentary shot of liquor was offered at the end of the meal, grappa or limoncello.

This gave us a moment to look around the restaurant and reflect on what we had experienced.
Forno d'Oro, glistening in the corner, churning out fresh and delicious pizzas to a restaurant full of patrons - there were couples on dates, young families with children, larger groups celebrating the high moments of life, and solo diners enjoying every delicious bite. Pizza really brings people together. ❤

It's true what they say.

The best things are made from the best things  - natural, fresh ingredients.

The simplest elements often make the most delicious foods. :)

Simplicity often makes for the most lasting memories.

A message from Forno d'Oro Pizzeria in Lisbon

With that, we left our table at 21:06, phew, 9 minutes to spare.
