What is a Niss?

A NISS is a Portuguese Social Security number.

What does NISS stand for?

Numero de Identificação de Segurança Social

Learn Portuguese!

Numero de Identificação - Identification Number
Segurança Social - Social Security

What Is a Niss For?

As a NISS is a social security number in Portugal, it's purpose is to allow it's holder to access social security benefits.

Having a NISS also allows your Portuguese employer to make necessary Social Security contributions on your behalf.

Do I need a Niss if I am Retired?

In the past, it was generally not necessary and in some cases not even possible for a retired foreigner in Portugal to obtain a NISS.

Some have reported needing a NISS to access state funded Portuguese language courses for foreigners and being able to obtain the number in that context (to attend the language course) without having employment in Portugal.

Currently, for foreigners who are retired and living in Portugal with a residence permit (título de residência), having a NISS is a *new* requirement.

Learn Portuguese!

How to say "retired" in European Portuguese: Reformado.
How to say "I am retired" in European Portuguese: Estou reformado (male) or Estou reformada (female)
You can also say "Sou reformado" or "Sou reformada"

Estou means "I am" and is usually used in the context of a temporary state whereas Sou means "I am" in a more permanent way. As retirement is generally a permanent status, you can correctly say "ou reformado/a" if you wish! :)

Can I get a Niss without a Job?

If you are still looking for a job in Portugal, you may be wondering "Can I get a NISS without a job?" The answer is yes because it is now required to have a NISS before renewing a Portuguese residence permit (título de residência).

Do I need a Niss if I do not work in portugal?

Yes. You will need a NISS. It is a new requirement for foreigners (estrangeiros) holding a Portuguese residence permit (título de residência) to obtain a NISS in order to renew (renovar) their Portuguese residence permit.

Do I need to pay for a NISS?

No. Obtaining a NISS is free and there is no fee for it from the Portuguese government / Social Security (Segurança Social).

Some choose to pay legal representatives to obtain the number in their behalf and in this case, of course, there would be a fee with the understanding that the fee is not for the actual number but for the service of someone else obtaining it for you.

Is a NISS needed to renew temporary residency in Portugal?

Yes. It is currently a new requirement for anyone renewing their Portuguese Residence Permit (título de residência) to have a NISS (Numero de Identificação de Segurança Social).

This will enable those reviewing the permit renewals to verify that the permit holder is in good standing with Social Security in Portugal and does not have any outstanding debts.

What documents do I need to get a Niss?

To get a NISS online you will need:
  • Portuguese NIF (Numero de Identificação Fiscal)
  • Identification such as Portuguese Residence Permit (título de residência) or Passport
  • Address

Can I request a NISS online?

Yes! You can successfully request a NISS online via the Segurança Social website seg-social.pt.

It can be a big challenging to find the correct link to access the form, so please see our tutorial "How To Get a NISS Online: A Step-By-Step Tutorial" for an easy to follow walk through. :)

Disclaimer

This article was written in good faith, in an effort to assist those who are very confused and possibly distressed trying to understand how they can request a NISS before renewing their temporary residence permit and having their appointment with AIMA. Processes and requirements are dynamic and can change at any time. It is our wish that this resource is helpful to you.

Continente Vs Lidl - Sliced Mozzarella Cheese Blind Taste Test

7/25/2025

We did a side-by-side blind taste test of Mozzarella cheese slices from Continente and from Lidl (Milbona brand) and the results were interesting...

Traveling to Portugal? Expat in Portugal? Check out our Lidl Review Blog + Continente Review Blog

Sliced Mozzarella Cheese - Better at Continente or Lidl?

Both Lidl and Continente have a similar packaging for their cheese slices. A plastic package that does not re-seal. *eyeroll* It's a great way for cheese to get dried out and weird quick.

Picture
Side By Side: Continente vs. Lidl Milbona Mozzarella Cheese Taste Test

Continente Queijo Mozzarella

Continente Mozzarella Cheese slices were inconsistently sliced, a sort of square-ish shape, and in this case those indents are just because this slice was on the bottom of the package.

Picture
Continente Mozzarella Cheese Slice | Portugal Food Blog

Mozzarella cheese from Continente is soft and creamy with a delicate texture.

Milbona Sliced Mozzarella Cheese from Lidl

The sliced mozzarella at Lidl comes in a round shape and is very flavorful.

Blind Taste Test Results

In the blind taste test we assumed the creamier cheese with less flavor was Lidl brand and the slice with more robust flavor was Continente's. We preferred the more flavorful slice.

In reality, the more flavorful slice belonged to Lidl's Milbona brand!

Therefore Lidl brand wins this taste off!

Which Mozzarella Cheese Should YOU BUy?

In the grand scheme of things, both of these are nice slices of mozzarella cheese which are tasty to eat on their own and melt well in, say, a grilled cheese sandwich.

After doing this taste test we repurchased Continente's because we happened to be at that grocery store when we needed more mozz. However if we were going to both stores we would pick it up at Lidl instead. :)

The Vitasia Glass Noodles from Lidl have 2 simple ingredients: amido de milho and amido de ervilha, that is corn starch and pea starch.

Picture
Lidl Asian Glass Noodles Nutrition Facts + Ingredients

How to Cook Vitasia Glass Noodles

Cooking glass noodles is simple. They need to be rehydrated in boiling water. They don't need to be in a pot of actively boiling water like spaghetti, for example.

Instead, simply boil water and pour it over the noodles and allow them to sit for 6 minutes before draining.
I actually used an electric tea kettle. :)

Serving Vitasia Glass Noodles

Once you drain the noodles you can proceed to serve them however you originally intended!

In this case, I divided the noodles into two bowls as a base for a chicken curry made with Vitasia Thai Red Curry Paste. (See Thai Curry cook along here- coming soon!)

I could Cry - Continente Cookie Wookie Ice Cream Sandwich Review

Will a classic chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich from Continente stack up to this chocolate cookie ice cream sandwich?

Continente Cookie Wookie First Impression

I have high standards for chocolate chip cookies and naturally one lowers said standards for a store brand ice cream sandwich, yet I must admit I am immediately skeptical.

Picture
Cookie Wookie Ice Cream Sandwich - Cookie Pic

Ice Cream Overhang

The cookie wookie presents with a bit of ice cream overhang and we can't be mad about that. Ice cream overhang can be like a muffin top - the best part.

Picture
The Ice Cream Over-Hang Was The Best Part :'(

It Nearly Brought Me To Tears...

This picture about sums up the Cookie Wookie.

Sad, sad, sad, sad, sadddddd ice cream sandwich experience.

Picture
First Bite: Continente Cookie Wookie - Made Us Saddie Waddie

Problems with this ice cream sandwich:

  • Cookie texture is not bueno. Crumbly and with very mediocre flavor.
  • The cookie sticks to your fingers in a weird, uncomfortable way. Blech.
  • Cookie-to-ice-cream ratio is off, especially given the mid-ness of the cookies themselves.

This last point is especially unfortunate because the ice cream actually had decent flavor and thanks to the aforementioned over-hang we could get a taste of it untainted by the crumbly blah-ness of the cookie. Sadly this element is completely lost because of how bad the cookie "bun" is. I hope Continente reworks this product.

Skip This!

Based on the box we bought, we'd say skip the Cookie Wookie at Continente. They have other ice cream products that are much better including this one.

On the other hand, A Very Good Ice Cream Sandwich:

Continente Skyr Yogurt Taste Test – Equilíbrio Brand Review (3 Flavors)

7/25/2025

Wondering if Continente's Equilíbrio Skyr Yogurt is worth trying? We taste-tested 3 flavors. Find out which was the clear loser of the bunch ... no pun intended ;)

Continente Skyr High Protein Drinkable Yogurt

What is Skyr?

Skyr is an Icelandic cultured dairy product (like yogurt). It is generally thick and creamy and higher in protein than other dairy products and yogurts. It takes 4 cups of milk to make 1 cup of Skyr, so you can see how concentrated the nutrition becomes.

Picture
Continente Equilíbrio Skyr - Ranking Banana, Strawberry, and Forest Fruits Flavors | Portugal Food Blog

How to Pronounce Skyr

Skyr is pronounced "Skeer".

Ranking Continente Skyr Worst to Best

First we will start by saying we love Skyr. It's such a great way to get easy protein (unlike this product)  and probiotics in your diet. Between squeeze pouches like these (coming soon) and drinkable versions like these from Continente, we prefer the drinkable option.

How Much Protein?

Each 160g bottle of Continente Skyr contains 11.4g of protein and costs about 52 euro cents!

Worst Skyr Flavor: Banana Flavor

Of the 3 flavors, forest fruits (berries), strawberry, and banana, we agreed that banana was the "least good" flavor. It has that fake banana flavor that threw us back to those popsicles you had when you were a kid that come two together and you split them in half. The fake banana flavor of those. iykyk.

It's overall fine and I would drink the banana flavor again, but if strawberry or frutos do bosque were options, we would always choose them first.

Also, somehow the tang of the cultured dairy product is more pronounced in the banana than the other flavors which is less appealing.

A Classic: Strawberry Skyr

Strawberry is a classic flavor for Skyr or yogurt and you can't go wrong picking up Skyr com aroma Morango  at Continente.

The Best Skyr Flavor: Frutos do Bosque

Our favorite flavor of Continente Equilibrio's Skyr product has to be frutos do bosque.

What is frutos do bosque in English?

Frutos do bosque in English is basically "forest fruits". Think delicious berries like strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and so on.

Continente Ice Cream Review – Menta e Chocolate Flavor Taste Test

7/25/2025

Continente grocery store in Portugal has it's own brand of ice cream and there are sort of two categories. The standard has a flat lid and the domed lids give the impression of a superior quality ice cream.

The day had come to try Continente's Mint Chocolate Gelado (Ice cream) and we went for the domed lid edition. (The chocolate swirl did me in!)

Continente Menta e Chocolate Gelado (Mint & Chocolate Ice Cream)

The packaging looks impressive with creamy mint ice cream surrounded by chocolate swirls and chocolate shavings.

Expectation Vs. Reality:

First Impressions:
I'd say the expectation was realistic! The ice cream looks really creamy, has plenty of chocolate shavings on top, and you can see the chocolate sauce ribbons at every valley.

Continente Menta e Chocolate Ice Cream Review:

From the first scoop this ice cream is a winner. If you like mint ice cream, you'll be happy to find this in your freezer. It is indeed very creamy while the mint flavor is extra refreshing on a hot day.

The chocolate ribbons really only run from the top down the sides, not throughout the center of the ice cream.
Still, I think the amount is acceptable!

Picture

The chocolate shavings are pretty, but I am always team chocolate swirl/chocolate sauce/fudge in ice cream as opposed to chewing bits of chocolate.

Migraine Tip:  Are you prone to migraines in the heat? Some find eating cold foods can take the edge off. Cold ice cream combined with the cooling effect of mint may give you a blissful bit of relief from your summertime migraine. YMMV, but it's worth a try isn't it? :)

Trying local flavors of snacks like potato chips (crisps for my English friends), is one of our favorite activities to do when traveling abroad. Have you done it?!

Classic Portuguese Flavored Chips (Crisps)

One very portuguese flavor of chips you will find when living in Portugal or while on holiday in Portugal is Leitão.

I'm a big fan of the leitao chips. I think they are a fun, very Portuguese flavor of crisps to try. I love that they have chosen wavy, ridge chips for this flavor.

While they aren't a flavor I want every single time, when you're in the mood for something a bit different they can be just what the doctor ordered. I love the peppery bite and I'm never mad I bought them.

Chef Select Canja de Galinha SEM Batata Review – Lidl Portugal Chicken Soup Taste Test

7/25/2025

I saw a reel this week about what it's like being married to a Portuguese. The woman was sitting on the beach on a super hot day and her husband went to get her a snack and comes back with a bowl of steaming soup...

This comically illustrates how the Portuguese feel about soup.

The Portuguese love soup. I love soup. I would happily eat soup on a hot beach.

This post is part of a series: July 2025 Lidl Grocery Store Finds • Americans in Portugal

Ready made Soup in Portuguese Grocery Stores

Portuguese grocery stores tend to have a nice selection of ready made soups in the refrigerated section and a few in the freezer section (like this green one and this orange one - coming soon).

You'll find the famous caldo verde (green soup) made with greens like kale or collard greens and chouriço. Aside from that you'll find a variety of vegetable based soups, mostly creamy, and most with potatoes.

But sometimes you just want some chicken soup!

Chicken Soup in Portugal

For whatever reason I've found it difficult to find a basic chicken soup in Portugal. Of course you can make your own and that's always the best, but sometimes you aren't up for that.

Bouillon cubes  are popular in Portugal, but you don't commonly see premade chicken stock or chicken broth to use as a base for soup or other cooking purpose unlike in the US where you will find an aisle full of vegetable, chicken, and beef stock and broth options.

When I saw this chicken soup at Lidl I had to give it a try!

Chef Select Canja Galinha Sem batata

Chef Select Canja Galinha Sem Batata
is a chicken noodle soup without potatoes. Many ready-to-eat soups in Portugal contain potatoes, whether in chunks or blended for texture and thickness.

This chicken soup from Lidl receives an A nutrition score and comes in a single serve package which you can microwave, but I opt to reheat on the stovetop personally.

Lidl Canja de Frango Ingredients and Nutrition Facts

What I love about the fresh soups throughout Portugual is they tend to have a short ingredient list that you can feel good about.

Ingredients: Shredded cooked chicken, carrots, onion, salt, parsley, durum wheat noodles, mint.

Picture
Canja de Frango Ingredientes & Nutrition Facts

Allergens: Contains Gluten!
Also warns that that it could contain vestiges of other allergens like crustaceans, eggs, fish, soy, milk, mustard, mollusks etc.

Protein: 4.7g protein per 100 grams. This bowl is about 400 grams, so thats almost 19 grams of protein from this single serving of soup.

How To Reheat Lidl Chicken Soup

Microwave: 3 Minutes at 850 watts will do the trick according to the package instructions.

I opted to reheat in a pan on my single burner cooktop.

Plenty of Noodles in Chef Select Canja Galinha

Plenty of noodles like Ancini di Pepe make this simple chicken soup more hearty.

Lidl Canja Galinha Review:

Now piping hot, you can see the glistening broth of this cozy chicken soup. Shreds of chicken were not bountiful, but were present. Plenty of noodles and a simple, comforting broth made it a pleasure to eat this chicken soup.

Picture
Comforting, warm chicken noodle soup from Lidl - Will buy again!

I really enjoyed Lidl's Canja Galinha Chicken Noodle Soup and would rebuy!

What to serve with chicken soup:
  • Enjoy with saltine crackers
  • Portuguese Bread and Portuguese Olive Oil
  • Side Salad
  • Some crisp refreshing fruits like grapes or sliced apples

Cadbury Roundie Review -  The Wafer Of My Dreams

7/20/2025

I've always loved Cadbury Chocolate. The eggs were a seasonal favorite (this kind and this kind), but the dairy milk chocolate bars, too, were deliciously creamy and dangerous.

When we were handed this bag of Cadbury Roundies I thought "Oh man. This is going to be good."

Spoiler Alert - I wasn't wrong.

Cadbury Roundie

This Cadbury Roundie travel exclusive bag came with 10 individually wrapped wafer cookies.

Picture

Each foil-wrapped wafer has a sticker on the bottom which reads:

"Cadbury Breakaway Milk Chocolate Biscuits. Wafers layered with cocoa filling covered in milk chocolate. Contains wheat, gluten, milk, soy. May contain egg, tree nuts, other cereals containing gluten."

Picture

Bearing that in mind, I suppose I can't recommend these to any food allergy buddies...

Blueberry Pancake and Mimosa Anniversary Brunch With Air Fryer Eggs!

7/20/2025

Our 16th anniversary was last month and we had a great day starting with a blueberry pancake and mimosa anniversary brunch!

This post is part of a series: June 2025 Lidl Grocery Store Finds • Americans in Portugal

How to make pancakes 101:

When making pancakes, I prefer to use a combination of butter and oil in the pan. This is not to be extra, there is a reason!

Butter helps create lovely golden crisp on your pancake, but it also burns faster than oil. So as you continue cooking pancakes you're more likely to get some a little too dark if you use only butter because of how the pan will retain heat.

Picture
How To Make A Blueberry Pancake

When you add some oil to the butter and swirl it together, you essentially increase the smoking point, so you can get that buttery golden touch without burning so easily! Still, keep an eye on the heat of your pan and adjust as needed.

I tossed a few blueberries on, just for fun. You can use frozen blueberries for pancakes. That's what these were. :)

New Category Added: Cook Along!

When To Flip A PanCake

It's important to let the first side of a pancake cook enough to enable a successful flip. Wait until you see lots of little bubbles on the surface like below and then go for it!

Picture
When To Flip A Pancake: Look For The Bubbles!

Try to flip with confidence and voila! You've revealed your golden-edged pancake - well done!

Picture
Use Butter + Oil (even on a non stick pan!) To Get a Golden Edged Pancake

What to serve with blueberry pancakes

I wanted to make the meal a little more complete and eggs are a natural choice, however I only have access to a single burner cook top at the moment which was occupied for the pancakes. So I decided to attempt to make eggs in the air fryer along with these tasty duchess potatoes.

Picture

Shop Top Rated Air Fryers

How long to cook fried eggs in an air fryer:

My search online indicated that it would only take 3-4 minutes to cook an egg with a runny yolk in the air fryer.

So I first cooked the duchess potatoes almost completely, minus about 5 minutes. Then I added the reusable silicone dinosaur molds (its all I had lol) for those last few minutes in order to time everything poiiiifectly!

Well timed, but not well photographed - forgot! Sorry!

Fita Azul Blanc de Blancs Reserva - Espumante

Some friends had kindly brought us a bottle of Fita Azul Blanc de Blancs Reserva Espumante recently and this was perfect to make some anniversary mimosas!

How to make a mimosa

I think a mimosa is technically champagne and orange juice, but lots of folks use prosecco and even more use any affordable and tasty sparkling wine they have access to. :) That's us!

Try This For a Mimosa With a Twist!

Mimosa: Sparkling wine first or juice first?

So in my head, I thought if you pour juice on top of the sparkling wine, doesn't that collapse some of the bubbles? Maybe, idk, but apparently the 'right' way is to pour the sparkling wine in first and then top with orange juice.

Picture
Mimosa Step One: Pour 1/2 or 2/3 Sparkling Wine, Prosecco, or Champagne

What is the right ratio of wine to juice for a mimosa?

Surprise, surprise, there are different schools of thought on this also. Some say 50:50, others say 2/3 sparkling wine/champagne to 1/3 orange juice. I say do whatever tastes great to you!

Want mostly orange juice with a bit of fizz? Go for it.
Want mostly champagne with a bit of OJ? Go for it!

This is a low stress, easy-to-make, fun drink for a celebration. It's a special occasion - enjoy it!

Picture
Mimosa Step Two: Top with Orange Juice!

PS. When in Portugal, if you can, please do try the fresh orange juice machines in grocery stores. The orange juice is delicious and as fresh as can be because you toss the oranges in yourself!

If you're going for juice from the juice isle, look specifically for the "laranja do algarve" labels as these orange juices feature the best oranges in Portugal - the ones from the beautiful, sunny Algarve. ;)

Pancake Anniversary Brunch: Done!

It was a lovely little brunch with blueberry pancakes, mimosas, espressos, air fryer eggs, and duchess potatoes.
